  • Patent number: 4181785
Abstract: A fast curing, high solids coating composition that is adapted for use as an automotive topcoat and which upon curing forms a hard, glossy, durable coating exhibiting excellent resistance to solvent and water. The coating composition contains greater than about 60 percent by weight of nonvolatile solids and, exclusive of pigments, solvents and other nonreactive components, consists essentially of:(A) a bifunctional copolymer bearing hydroxy functionality and pendant epoxy functionality, having a number average molecular weight (M.sub.n) of between about 1500 and about 10,000 and a glass transition temperature (Tg) of between about -25.degree. and about 70.degree. C.;(B) at least one organophosphate ester selected from certain mono- and diesters of phosphoric acid;(C) an amine-aldehyde resin crosslinking agent; and(D) optionally a hydroxy functional additive. The organophosphate ester is included in the composition in an amount sufficient to provide between about 0.67 and about 1.

  • Patent number: 4092373
Abstract: Improved powder coating compositions are disclosed which a particulate mixture of (1) an epoxy-functional copolymer of about 5 to about 20 weight percent of a glycidyl ester of a monoethylenically unsaturated acid and about 95 to about 80 weight percent of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers consisting essentially of monofunctional monomers selected from the group consisting of esters of a C.sub.1 - C.sub.8 monohydric alcohol and acrylic acid, esters of a C.sub.1 - C.sub.8 monohydric alcohol and methacrylic acid and C.sub.8 - C.sub.12 monovinyl hydrocarbons, and having a glass transition temperature in the range of 40.degree. to about 90.degree. C. and a molecular weight (M.sub.n) in the range of about 1,500 to about 15,000, (2) an anhydride crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of (a) monomeric anhydrides of dicarboxylic acids and (b) homopolymers of monomeric anhydrides of dicarboxylic acids, and present in an amount that provides about 0.3 to about 1.
