  • Patent number: 6420041
Abstract: A skin layer of a thermoplastic polymer includes an additive to promote metal adhesion to the surface of this layer. This additive is one or more compounds of the formula, R-X, where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbyl group having an average of from 20 to 200 carbon atoms and X is a polar group, such as —COOH or —CH2OH. The film may be biaxially oriented and include a polypropylene core layer. The film may be metallized with an appropriate metal, such as aluminum. A heat sealable skin layer may be provided on the opposite side of the film from the metallizable skin layer.

  • Patent number: 6287700
Abstract: A laminated film structure that includes a primary web having a migratory additive in a first outer layer and a metallocene polyethylene in a second outer layer that can be laminated to a secondary web without treating the surface of the second outer layer with a primer or solvent. The primary web further includes a core substrate layer disposed between the two outer layers that can include a biaxially oriented polypropylene. The laminated film structures have improved bond strength between the primary web and the secondary web.

  • Patent number: 6248442
Abstract: The present invention relates to multilayer film which is heat sealable over a broad temperature range. It is desirable to have a broad sealing temperature range to increase the production of packaging machines. The present invention also relates to multilayer film which provides easy opening and hermetic seals to packages. The film is made up of a core layer comprising linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and at least one skin layer having a melting point of at least 10° C. below the core layer melting point.

  • Patent number: 5981079
Abstract: A multi layer film having enhanced barrier properties against transmission of oxygen and water vapor is provided. The multi layer film includes a polypropylene base layer, with a high density polyethylene layer on at least one surface of the polypropylene base layer. The polyethylene layer includes a surface which has been subjected to plasma treatment with a hydroxyl-donating material such as a methanol. The film further includes a metal layer deposited on the plasma treated surface, such as a layer of vacuum deposited aluminum. Multi layer films according to the present invention are particularly useful as packaging films for food products.

  • Patent number: 5672383
Abstract: A carbon coated polymeric film is produced by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition. An amorphous nylon layer having at least one exposed high energy surface is adhered to a polymeric substrate. Carbon is thereafter deposited on the exposed high energy surface by vapor deposition of a decomposable precursor in the presence of plasma.

  • Patent number: 5049436
Abstract: A multilayer film is hermetically heat sealable over a broad temperature range. In one embodiment, a heat sealable layer is provided to a polypropylene core layer. The heat sealable layer comprises an ethylene-propylene copolymer and/or an ethylene-propylene-butene terpolymer with an inorganic antiblock agent having a particle size of at least 0.8 micron and at least about 1000 ppm of a fatty acid amide, the layer having a thickness of at least about 10-25% of the total film thickness. A metal-receiving layer may be provided to a surface of the core layer opposite the heat-sealable layer and the film may be metallized.

  • Patent number: 4888237
Abstract: A process for manufacturing a metallized polymeric film to provide a structure possessing high metal-to-film adhesion and little, if any, tendency toward metal fracture is disclosed. In one embodiment of the process, at least one polyolefin layer is provided to a film which includes a substantially isotactic polymer having a degree of atacticity of no more than about 6%. The isotactic component is preferably polypropylene homopolymer. Other components include up to about 34% of an adhesive-promoting component which can be a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 polymer, including homo-, co-, and terpolymers having C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 carbon chains, and a second isotactic polymer having a degree of atacticity of from about 6% to about 15%. The surface of the polyolefin layer is subjected to flame treatment followed by vacuum metallization of this surface (preferably with aluminum).
