  • Patent number: 5181992
Abstract: Mixtures of isomers, e.g., mixtures of phenethyl bromide and 1-phenyl-1-bromoethane, are separated by (a) selectively condensing one such isomer with an aromatic compound bearing at least one aryl (nuclear) hydrogen atom, e.g., xylene, in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, e.g., ferric chloride, and then (b) separating the product of condensation, e.g., phenylxylylethane, from the unreacted isomer.

  • Patent number: 5057633
Abstract: The invention relates to the preparation of perfluoroalkyl bromides or bromoperfluoroalkanes C.sub.n F.sub.2n+1 -Br (n=1 to 20).A perfluoroalkanesulphonyl chloride C.sub.n F.sub.2n+1 -SO.sub.2 Cl is reacted with a compound of formula: ##STR1## in which X represents a nitrogen or phosphorus atom and R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4, which may be identical or different, each represent an optionally substituted hydrocarbon radical, it also being possible for one of these symbols to be a hydrogen atom.

  • Patent number: 4996360
Abstract: The arylsulfonyl(alkyl)amides, notably N-(n-butyl)benzenesulfonamide, well adopted as heat-stable plasticizers for polyamides, e.g., nylon 11 and nylon 12, are directly prepared by (a) intimately contacting an arylsulfonyl halide with a stoichiometric excess of both an alkylamine and an alkaline agent, with the alkaline agent being present in aqueous solution, (b) eliminating water and excess alkylamine from the organic phase produced in stage (a), and (c) separating final product arylsulfonyl(alkyl)amide from the residual organic phase remaining after stage (b).
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 15, 1989
Date of Patent: February 26, 1991
    Assignee: Atochem
    Inventors: Raymond Commandeur, Elie Ghenassia
  • Patent number: 4499222
Abstract: Phosphorus-containing flame proofing mixtures with low crystallization temperatures and with the ability significantly to improve the flame resistance of materials without adversely affecting the other properties of the materials, the mixtures being principally comprised of phosphonates having the structure: ##STR1## wherein X is chloro or bromo; Z.sub.1, Z.sub.2 and Z.sub.3 are the same or different and are --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 -- or ##STR2## and R is CH.sub.3 or CH.sub.2 Cl, and the molar ratio of the --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --X groups to the total of --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --X and the --CH.sub.2 --CHR--X groups is from 2 to 90%, these flame proofing mixtures being usable with both synthetic and natural materials, together with the flame-resistive natural and synthetic materials so made.
