    Abstract: Trifluoromethylsulfonic acid has been found to be an extremely useful catalyst for the manufacture of mercaptans from olefins or viscous polyolefins and hydrogen sulfide. Also a novel process for the preparation of mercaptans is disclosed which proven comprises reacting olefins or polyolefins at a temperature of about -10.degree. to 70.degree. C. with hydrogen sulfide under pressure of about 1 to 10 atmospheres in the presence of about 0.05 to 10 percent by weight of the olefins of the trifluoromethylsulfonic acid. The mercaptans produced according to the novel process are useful in the preparation of nonionic surfactants for lubricating oils and in the enhanced oil recovery as well as for biocides. Novel beta-polybutenylsulfoxy-alpha-hydroxyethylbenzenes have also been prepared. These are useful in the preparation of nonionic surfactants for lubricating oils and as biocides.

    Abstract: This invention relates to the intramolecular oxidation and reduction of aromatic hydrocarbons containing at least one methyl group and a nitro group ortho to the methyl group. Further, it relates to preparing methyl o-amino arylcarboxylates and aromatic amines. The process comprises reacting aromatic hydrocarbons having at least one methyl group and a nitro group ortho to the methyl group in a solvent at a temperature of about 450.degree. to 750.degree. C. When the solvent is methanol, methyl o-amino arylcarboxylates useful in anesthetics, printing inks for polyethylene, and useful in the manufacture of azo dyes are produced. Novel substituted methyl anthranilates have been produced which have the foregoing uses. When no solvent is used or the solvent is benzene, cyclohexane, toluene, hexafluorobenzene or any other non-reactive solvent, the compounds are demethylated and aromatic amines are produced.

    Abstract: A decarboxylation process for coupling aromatic compounds wherein cyclic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic compounds having at least one labile ring hydrogen are reacted with the mono silver salts of aromatic carboxylic acids, or mono silver salts of unsaturated compounds such as .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated acid compounds, or silver trifluoroacetate, or the mono silver salts are reacted with themselves, by heating to temperatures of 100.degree. to 500.degree. C. at pressures of 0.1 to 10 atmospheres, or by irradiating the reactants with ultraviolet light of 200 to 400 nanometers at temperatures of -30.degree. to 100.degree. C. The resulting dimers, trimers, polysubstituted polyphenyls, polyheterocyclics and trifluoromethylated aromatics are useful as heat transfer media, as intermediates for high molecular weight polymers, pesticides and petroleum additives, and as scintillation counters.
