Patent number: 9401639Abstract: A system and method capable of injection locking the phases of a peak-valley multiphase regulator includes comparing an output voltage error signal with a ramp control signal and providing a corresponding slope reset signal, using transitions of the slope reset signal to develop a equally spaced high side ramp signals and equally spaced low side ramp signals, and injecting a corresponding one of the high side signals and a corresponding one of the low side ramp signals into each of the phases which correspondingly develop equally spaced pulse control signals for multiphase operation. Such injection locking allows the additional phases to operate out of phase with the first phase and allows operation at high duty cycles.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2013Date of Patent: July 26, 2016Assignee: INTERSIL AMERICAS LLCInventors: Rhys S. Patent number: 9190907Abstract: An equivalent series inductance (ESL) cancel circuit for a regulator for adjusting a feedback voltage by attenuating a magnitude of a square wave ripple voltage developed on an output voltage. The regulator includes an output inductor and an output capacitor, in which the capacitor has an ESL which forms an inductive voltage divider with the output inductor causing the square wave voltage ripple. The ESL cancel circuit may include first and second current sources and a resistor device coupled between the output node and an adjust node which is further coupled to a feedback input of the regulator. The first current source applies a current proportional to the output voltage to the adjust node. The second current source selectively applies a current proportional to the input voltage of the regulator based on a state of the pulse control signal.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 2013Date of Patent: November 17, 2015Assignee: INTERSIL AMERICAS LLCInventors: Rhys S. Patent number: 8723500Abstract: A voltage regulator generates a regulated output voltage responsive to an input voltage and drive control signals. An error amplifier generates an error voltage signal responsive to the regulated output voltage and a reference voltage. A PWM modulator generates a PWM control signal responsive to the error voltage signal, a ramp voltage and an inverse of the reference voltage. Control circuitry within the PWM modulator maintains the error voltage signal applied to the PWM modulator at substantially a same DC voltage level over the reference voltage operating range and maintains the error voltage signal above a minimum value of the ramp voltage. Driver circuitry generates the drive control signals responsive to the PWM control signal.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 2011Date of Patent: May 13, 2014Assignee: Intersil Americas Inc.Inventors: Michael Jason Houston, Weihong Qiu, Emil Chen

Patent number: 8344777Abstract: Systems, methods, and apparatus for improving steady state operation of a pulse width modulator during transient and soft start events are described herein. An apparatus can include a phase component configured to adaptively modify a pulse width of a first pulse width modulated (PWM) output signal based on a pulse width of a PWM input signal. Further, the apparatus can include a power stage component configured to source at least one of a voltage or a current to a load based on the first PWM output signal. In one example, the phase component can be configured to linearly extend the pulse width of the first PWM output signal based on the pulse width of the PWM input signal. In another example, the phase component can be configured to adaptively modify the pulse width of the first PWM output signal based on a predetermined maximum pulse width.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2010Date of Patent: January 1, 2013Assignee: Intersil Americas Inc.Inventors: Weihong Qiu, Chun Cheung, Emil Chen

Patent number: 7898310Abstract: A phase doubler driver circuit includes first control logic generates a first output PWM drive signal and a second output PWM drive signal responsive to an input PWM drive signal. In a first mode of operation, alternating pulses of the input PWM drive are output as the first output PWM drive signal and the second PWM output drive signal respectively. In a second mode of operation, the input PWM drive signal is provided as the first output PWM drive signal when a second phase current associated with the second output PWM drive signal exceeds a first phase current associated with the first output PWM drive signal and the input PWM drive signal is provided as the second output PWM drive signal when the phase current associated with the first output PWM signal exceed the phase current associated with the second output PWM signal.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2009Date of Patent: March 1, 2011Assignee: Intersil Americas Inc.Inventors: Weihong Qui, Chun Cheung, Emil Chen, Paul Sferrazza, Robert Isham
