  • Publication number: 20080127644
Abstract: By means of a pre-swirl device, in steady-state engine operation, the rotational speed lines of the compressor are moved, by increasing the swirl at the compressor inlet in the rotational direction of the compressor, to such an extent that the steady-state operating point of the compressor comes to rest approximately at the absorption limit of the compressor. In this way, the level of the charge pressure can be adjusted in a controlled fashion to the value required for the respective engine operating point. In the event of a sudden increase in the engine load, it is possible by resetting the pre-swirl grate to generate a charge pressure increase without a time-consuming rotor acceleration. The pre-swirl device therefore simultaneously assumes the functions of charge pressure and engine load control.

  • Patent number: 6571770
Abstract: So that sufficient combustion air is available in all the cylinders of a diesel internal combustion engine both under part load and in transient operating states, oxygen-containing gas or additional gas or compressed air from a gas distributor is additionally supplied under pressure to the combustion space of the cylinder, even after the diesel internal engine has been started, through at least one separate additional-gas inlet by means of at least one separate additional-gas valve (V1a). The supply of this additional gas can commence after closing of an air inlet valve (VE) or of an air outlet valve (VA) of the diesel internal combustion engine. The method is suitable for both 4-stroke and 2-stroke diesel internal combustion engines.

  • Patent number: 5713200
Abstract: A simple exhaust system is disclosed with improved operational reliability and an increased service life for a turbocharged internal combustion engine, in which system both the advantages of shock-wave charging and those of pulse-converter charging are used, depending on the operating state of the internal combustion engine. These advantages are achieved by virtue of the fact that extension pieces (12, 13) are formed for the shock pipes (6, 7) and are arranged upstream of the connection line (8, 9) furthest away from the exhaust turbine (5). Each shock pipe (6, 7) is connected to a corresponding extension piece (12, 13). The interconnection conduit/s (14) is/are formed between the extension pieces (12, 13). Each interconnection conduit (14) has a cross-sectional constriction (15).

  • Patent number: 5564275
Abstract: A method and apparatus for high-pressure end exhaust gas recirculation on a supercharged internal combustion engine which is relatively simple, low in cost and increases the efficiency of the engine. This is achieved by a third exhaust gas flow of the internal combustion engine expanding separately from a first exhaust gas flow and by providing power to compress a second exhaust gas flow. For this purpose, a turbine is arranged as the drive for the exhaust gas compressor. The exhaust gas duct system has a third exhaust gas duct connected to the turbine.
