  • Patent number: 6320925
Abstract: A spacer of a fuel assembly having intersecting webs undergoes reduced longitudinal expansion as a result of corrosion during an operating period. The webs have intersection locations at which assembly gaps are provided. The assembly gaps have widths which correspond essentially, at most over a fraction of their total length, to the wall thickness of an intersecting web, but are wider in a remaining region. Since corrosion layers growing from an edge of an assembly gap toward the intersecting web cannot touch the web, no solid pressure, which could lead to longitudinal expansion, builds up.

  • Patent number: 5642390
Abstract: A uranium-containing nuclear-fuel sintered pellet containing UO.sub.2, (U, Pu)O.sub.2, (U, Th)O.sub.2, (U, RE)O.sub.2, (U, Pu, Th)O.sub.2, (U, Pu, RE)O.sub.2, (U, Th, RE)O.sub.2 or (U, Pu, Th, RE)O.sub.2, wherein RE=rare earth, has a sintered-pellet surface layer being formed of at least 80% by volume of a chemical boron compound UB.sub.x or (U, . . . )B.sub.x, wherein x=2;4;6 or 12, and a remainder of the sintered pellet containing at most 5% by volume of the chemical boron compound. A nuclear-reactor fuel assembly has a fuel rod containing such a uranium-containing nuclear-fuel sintered pellet in a cladding tube with the boron as a burnable absorber for thermal neutrons. The surface layer having the chemical boron compound is obtained by treating the nuclear-fuel sintered pellet with boron or a boron-containing chemical compound at an appropriately high treatment temperature.

  • Patent number: 4938920
Abstract: A nuclear reactor fuel assembly includes a fuel rod containing nuclear fuel in a cladding tube formed of an iron-containing zirconium alloy. A fuel assembly skeleton to which the fuel rod is attached has a structural part formed of the iron-containing zirconium alloy. The iron-containing zirconium alloy has an oxygen content of from 0.1 to 0.16% by weight and contains alloy components of from 0 to 1% by weight of niobium, 0 to 0.8% by weight of tin, at least two metals from the group consisting of iron, chromium and vanadium having from 0.2 to 0.8% by weight of iron, 0 to 0.4% by weight of chromium and 0 to 0.3% by weight of vanadium, a total percent by weight of iron, chromium and vanadium of from 0.25 to 1% by weight, and a total percent by weight for niobium and tin in the range from 0 to 1% by weight.

  • Patent number: 4759221
Abstract: An apparatus for determining the depth of cracks in the surfaces of workpieces includes an ultrasonic transducer for sending ultrasonic signals to and receiving ultrasonic signals from the workpiece, an analyzer connected to the ultrasonic transducer for forming a frequency spectrum from the ultrasonic signals, an evaluating unit connected to the analyzer for determining an effective band width correlated with the depth of the cracks in the workpiece as the quotient of the integral of the frequency spectrum and the ordinate value of the center of concentration of the integrated surface of the frequency spectrum, and an indicator connected to the evaluating unit for indicating the depth of the cracks.
