  • Patent number: 5137975
Abstract: A method for the treatment of melt-grafted polypropylene to improve adhesive properties thereof is disclosed. Molten grafted polypropylene, formed by melt grafting polypropylene with an alpha, beta unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride, is treated in melt processing apparatus with a minor amount of an aqueous solution of an alkaline material e.g. an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. The thus treated grafted polypropylene is separated from the aqueous solution and recovered e.g. in the form of pellets. The melt-grafted polypropylene may be formed in the melt processing apparatus prior to treatment with the aqueous solution or polypropylene that has been grafted in a previous operation may be fed to the apparatus. The treated polymer may be used in adhesive formulations.
