Abstract: A synthetic fuel production system and related techniques are disclosed. In accordance with some embodiments, the disclosed system may be configured to produce a liquid fuel using carbon dioxide extracted from the air and hydrogen generated from aqueous solutions by electrochemical means (e.g., water electrolysis). In production of the fuel, the disclosed system may be configured, in accordance with some embodiments, to react the carbon dioxide and hydrogen, for example, to form methanol. The disclosed system also may be configured, in accordance with some embodiments, to utilize one or more subsequent reaction steps to produce a given targeted set of hydrocarbons and partially oxidized hydrocarbons. For example, the disclosed system may be used to produce any one (or combination) of: ethanol; dimethyl ether; formic acid; formaldehyde; alkanes of various chain length; olefines; aliphatic and aromatic carbon compounds; and mixtures thereof, such as gasoline fuels, diesel fuels, and jet fuels.

  • Patent number: 10898949
Abstract: Techniques and apparatus for electromagnetically stirring a melt material are disclosed. In accordance with some embodiments, the system may include a containment vessel within which a melt material may be disposed. The melt material may include, for example, an electrically conductive alloy, which optionally may be non-ferromagnetic and/or glass-forming. In its molten state, the melt material may have alternating current (AC) applied directly thereto while being immersed in a magnetic field, which may be static or dynamic, depending on the desired stirring effect. Application of the AC and magnetic field may continue as the melt material cools and solidifies, the sinusoidal nature of the AC and the Lorentz force of the magnetic field providing convective motion which tends to agitate the molten melt material in a manner which may realize an improvement in heat transfer and chemical homogeneity of the resultant cast solid.

  • Patent number: 10563275
Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for creation of amorphous metals using electromagnetic supercooling of a metal/alloy without the utilization of rapid quenching or immaculate process environments. By exposing the cooling melt to electric currents, either induced by an alternating current (AC) magnetic field or supplied directly, crystallization is suppressed, and the melt can reach significant levels of supercooling. With sufficient current densities in the melt, the supercooling can extend all the way into the glass transition range for certain materials, at which point an amorphous metal/alloy is created.

  • Publication number: 20140206779
Abstract: Methods and systems for converting gaseous hydrocarbons to synthesis gas are disclosed. In some embodiments, the methods include the following: thermochemically decomposing a gaseous hydrocarbon stream in an oxygen-free environment to develop carbon and hydrogen; partially oxidizing the carbon in a hydrogen-free environment to develop carbon monoxide; mixing amounts of the carbon monoxide and the hydrogen to generate a synthesis gas; and processing the synthesis gas to generate a synthetic fuel.

  • Patent number: 4980184
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for the preservation of hay and other forages for animals and is characterized by distributing to the forages in finely dispersed form and in active amounts to block the growth of fungi and any other biological activity an agent with the ability to achieve a high osmotic pressure in the humidity of the forage. The so treated forage is then brought to storage. The agent according to the invention is a concentrated water solution of an electrolyte with high water solubility stable at actual working temperature, which does not contain elements harmful for animals or humans.
