  • Patent number: 11886392
Abstract: Provided are a computer program product, system and method for retaining versions of an object. Changes are appended to a current version object resulting in a new current version object and a most recent previous version object comprising the current version object before the changes were appended. Version metadata, for each previous version object, includes the most recent previous version object, indicating an offset in the new current version object at which the previous version object can be recovered. The most recent previous version object is deleted and the version metadata, for the most recent previous version object after the most recent previous version object is deleted, is retained to allow recovery of a previous version object from the new current version object using the offset in the version metadata.

  • Publication number: 20220413973
Abstract: Provided are a computer program product, system and method for restoring volumes in a data storage system. A virtual restoration of a volume of data stored in storage is performed using a target volume. In one embodiment, the virtual restoration includes configuring metadata associated with the target volume, to map the target volume to the recover volume as a virtual restoration of the recover volume. In response to a request by a host for data stored on the recover volume, physical restoration of data of the recover volume is performed using the target volume. In one embodiment, the physical restoration includes transferring data to the target volume from the recover volume to which the target volume is mapped by the virtual restoration. In addition, transferred data is relabeled as target volume data instead of recover volume data.

  • Patent number: 11287982
Abstract: A computer-implemented method, according to one embodiment, is for managing data received at a storage device. The computer-implemented method includes: receiving data management policies, and receiving two or more connection names from a host. Each of the connection names is correlated with one or more of the data management policies. Moreover, a connection path which extends between the storage device and the host is created. The connection path also has a connection name which corresponds thereto. Data is received along the connection path, and the connection name which corresponds to the connection path is matched to one of the connection names received from the host. Furthermore, the received data is processed according to the one or more data management policies that are correlated with the matching one of the connection names received from the host.

  • Publication number: 20070214311
Abstract: Device initialization of subsystems of a data storage library determines whether a subsystem is homogeneous, having common types of devices; or is heterogeneous, having mixed types of devices. Host names are provided for a subsystem in a predetermined format by concatenating the library name, the subsystem name, and a supplemental character; where the supplemental character is a non-defining character for a homogeneous subsystem. For naming purposes, a heterogeneous mixed device subsystem is partitioned into partitions of devices having common types of devices, each partition characterized as a separate homogeneous subsystem with a host name implementing the supplemental character as a defining character.

  • Publication number: 20070073964
Abstract: A method and apparatus for handling multi-volume datasets in a tape storage system are disclosed. In response to a write request for a multi-volume dataset, the information of the multi-volume dataset are captured by intercepting and deciphering a set of volume mount commands. Otherwise, the information of the multi-volume dataset are captured by snooping header information from a previous volume listed in a header of the multi-volume dataset. A chain of logical volume names that belongs to the multi-volume dataset is then built. Finally, the chain of logical volume names is then stored in a chain database.

  • Publication number: 20060217834
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for dynamically compressing categories in a data storage library. In one embodiment, the method includes retrieving an identification of a first category in the data storage library, the first category being a last-compressed category. Next, an identification number of a first order of the first category is retrieved, the first order being a last compressed order. Compression is resumed of orders in the first category with an order next following the first order and continued with additional orders in the first category. If a predetermined amount of time has elapsed, the identification of the first category and the identification number of the order of the first category being compressed are stored. If, however, the predetermined amount of time has not elapsed and compression of the first category is complete, compression of a second category is begun.

  • Publication number: 20060161730
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for enforcing policy controls for non-system managed tape media. The apparatus includes an operating system configured to communicate with a tape media drive, and an identification module configured to identify a tape media type of a tape media cartridge. The apparatus may also include a policy module configured to maintain control policies for tape media types, and a media control module configured to enforce the control policies. The system includes a computing system having a processor, a cache, an operating system, and a plurality of input/output interfaces, a tape media drive coupled to the computing system, and the apparatus. The method includes communicating with a tape media drive, identifying a tape media type of a tape media cartridge, maintaining a plurality of control policies for tape media types, and enforcing the plurality of control policies.

  • Publication number: 20050050263
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are presented for utilizing tape storage media segmentation to improve data access performance. A segmented tape storage medium within a tape cartridge having a first and second segment is utilized. A selection module allows a user to select a user-defined capacity of the tape storage medium that is less than the usable capacity of the tape storage medium. The user-defined capacity allows the user to prefer improved data access over tape storage capacity. Data, when written to the tape, is written only within the user-defined capacity. Data may be written exclusively on the first segment or written on both the first segment and second segment allowing data access to be improved. In addition, the user-defined capacity may correspond to the full capacity of the tape storage media.

  • Publication number: 20050050055
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are presented for scaling storage media to improve data access performance. A scaling module is provided and configured to receive a dataset, identify storage characteristics of the dataset, make a determination based upon user-defined storage criteria, and select a storage instruction. In one embodiment, the storage instruction is configured to scale the storage medium to a predefined capacity. The predefined capacity of the storage medium is configured to optimize data access performance. Alternatively, the storage instruction is configured to not scale the storage medium. Additionally, the present invention may be configured to map and track the storage medium while the dataset is being written to or read from the storage medium.
