  • Patent number: 6842207
Abstract: An active matrix liquid crystal display panel by which a good display characteristic can be obtained without suffering from gradation reversal over a wide visibility angle range. A liquid crystal layer 4 is formed such that the thickness thereof varies in accordance with transmission wavelengths of color layers 6, 7 and 8 so that a very good display which does not exhibit any coloring in whichever direction it is viewed may be obtained. An active matrix substrate A includes a plurality of opposing electrodes 2, a plurality of pixel electrodes 3 parallel to the opposing electrodes 2, a thin film transistor, and an orientation film 23 all formed on a glass substrate 10. A color filter substrate C includes an orientation film 56 provided on one surface of another glass substrate 10 and an optical compensation layer 35 provided on the other surface of the glass substrate 10 and formed from a plastic film.

  • Patent number: 6680768
Abstract: In a liquid crystal display device comprising first and second substrates having first and second principal surfaces which are opposed to each other with a space left therebetween, first and second alignment layers are formed on the first and the second principal surfaces of the first and the second substrates. The first alignment layer is subjected to a first aligning treatment in a first aligning treatment direction while a second alignment layer is subjected to a second aligning treatment in a second aligning treatment direction which shifts from the first aligning treatment direction by a predetermined slight angle. Interposed between the first and the second alignment layers, a liquid crystal layer comprises a plurality of liquid crystal molecules each of which is twist aligned by a twist angle equal to the predetermined slight angle.

  • Publication number: 20040008299
Abstract: A LCD device prevents the color irregularities (e.g., the red-color irregularity) from occurring without complicating the fabrication processes of a color filter. Switching elements are formed on a first substrate. A color layer is formed on a second substrate. The color layer has a red sublayer, a green sublayer, and a blue sublayer. A liquid-crystal layer is located between the first and second substrates The second substrate includes no electrodes formed in such a way as to be located on a side nearer to the liquid-crystal layer with respect to the color layer. A green-coloring composition forming the green sublayer contains a pigment having a copper phthalocyanine skeleton. A ratio in weight of the pigment with respect to the green-coloring composition is equal to or less than approximately 27%.

  • Patent number: 6667788
Abstract: A liquid crystal panel has a cholesteric filter and the quarter wave plate inserted between a glass substrate and color filter elements, and each section of the cholesteric filter reflects either right-handed or left-handed circularly polarized light component recognized as one of the three primary colors and the circularly polarized light components recognized as other primary colors toward a light source so as to recycle these circularly polarized light components, thereby enhancing the utilization factor of incident light without increase of power consumption.

  • Publication number: 20030053012
Abstract: Within a reflective display section R, a part of a light that reaches a reflective electrode through a color filter exits to the outside through slits and a part of a light that reaches the reflective electrode through the slits exits to the outside through the color filter. In addition, a light reaching the reflective electrode through the color filter and exiting to the outside through the color filter, and a light having no opportunity to pass through the slits also can be observed. Therefore, a mean film thickness of color filter through which all lights pass during the time in which they travel the associated distance after they are inputted to the inside until they are outputted to the outside becomes nearly equal to that could be observed in the transmissive section T.

  • Patent number: 6191837
Abstract: A liquid crystal display and method of producing the same. The liquid crystal display comprises a first substrate having an outside surface and an inside surface, a second substrate having an outside surface and an inside surface facing the inside surface of the first substrate, and a liquid crystal composition sandwiched between the first and second substrates. The inside surface of the first substrate has disposed thereon at least first and second electrodes to thereby provide an electric field having a direction transverse to the first and second substrates and which controls the polarizing activity of the liquid crystal when a voltage is developed between the first and second electrodes. Furthermore, an electroconductive film is provided on the outside surface of one or both of the first and second substrates. The orientation of the liquid crystal is controlled by a transversely-oriented electric field.

  • Patent number: 6097467
Abstract: Disclosed is a liquid crystal display device, for controlling liquid crystal by using a latitudinal electric field. Gate wires and drain wires, and switching devices at their intersections, are formed on a transparent active matrix substrate. Source electrodes connected to the switching devices and parallel common electrodes are also formed on the active matrix substrate. Liquid crystal is controlled by an electric field parallel to the surface of the active matrix substrate. By using the same material as are used for color filters, spacers having cylindrical, elliptical, or hemispherical shapes are formed on an opposing substrate at locations that correspond to the intersections of the gate wires and the drain wires.

  • Patent number: 6078375
Abstract: In an LCD device of an IPS (In-Plane Switching) mode having two alignment films which are subjected to individual aligning treatments and between which liquid crystal molecules are interposed and sealed, the aligning treatments of the two alignment films are carried out in the same directional orientation to put the molecules into a state of splay alignment. Specifically, parts of the molecules adjacent to the two alignment films have pretilt angles each of which has an absolute value not smaller than two degrees due to influence of the aligning treatments. Therefore, an appearance of undesirable light points is suppressed in the manufacturing the LCD device, and the LCD device has a good yield.
