  • Patent number: 4636528
Abstract: Low density foams are prepared from an admixture which comprises an unsaturated polyester resin, a free radical initiator which initiator is activated at temperatures from about 100.degree. to about 400.degree. F., and a compound selected from a t-alkylhydrazinium salt or a carbonylhydrazine. The low density foams have uniform cell structure without cracks or voids and the process is efficient.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 21, 1986
Date of Patent: January 13, 1987
    Assignee: Pennwalt Corporation
Inventors: Ernest R. Kamens, John P. Cassoni
  • Patent number: 4460714
Abstract: Low density polyester resin foams are prepared at ambient temperatures from an admixture of an unsaturated polyester resin, an organic isocyanate compound, a peroxide curing agent system, a surfactant, and an accelerator whereby the foaming efficiency of this admixture is improved by adding small amounts of an inorganic iron salt.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 1, 1983
Date of Patent: July 17, 1984
    Assignee: Pennwalt Corporation
    Inventor: Ernest R. Kamens
  • Patent number: 4435525
Abstract: Low density foams are prepared from an admixture which comprises a medium which is polymerizable and/or crosslinkable by free radical initiation, carbonylhydrazine blowing agent, a peroxide curing agent, a suitable surfactant, and at least one transition metal salt promoter wherein at least one of the metal salts is a compound of iron or copper. The blowing agent in the presence of an effective amount of the transitional metal salt promoter improves the efficiency of the process.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 28, 1983
Date of Patent: March 6, 1984
    Assignee: Pennwalt Corporation
    Inventor: Ernest R. Kamens

  • Patent number: 4167613
Abstract: In the foaming of a polymerizable medium (such as an unsaturated polyester resin) by using acid sensitive azo compounds, significant improvement in the foaming efficiency can be obtained by incorporating in the resin medium 0.001%-10% by weight based on the weight of the resin compounds which exert an inhibiting effect on free radical polymerization. Examples of such compounds include methacrylonitrile, alphamethylstyrene and laurylmercaptan.

Date of Patent: September 11, 1979
    Assignee: Pennwalt Corporation
Inventors: Ernest R. Kamens, Vasanth R. Kamath
