  • Patent number: 8173571
Abstract: Large quantities of explosive hydrogen-oxygen mixtures can be produced by leaks or accidents in technical plants, e.g. nuclear reactors. The invention relates to a catalyst, a catalyst system, an arrangement for recombining hydrogen with oxygen, and a method for producing a catalyst. The inventive catalyst is characterized in that the ignition point of the mixture is exceeded under no circumstances even though the catalyst works in a strictly passive manner without outside intervention and the recombination is an exothermal reaction. The basic idea is to design the catalyst such that the catalyst autonomously limits the activity thereof in accordance with the prevailing temperature.

  • Patent number: 6846775
Abstract: The invention relates to a catalyst element for a recombinator for eliminating hydrogen from accident atmospheres, in which the technical problem of continuously efficiently converting both small and large amounts of hydrogen with the atmospheric air-oxygen present in the safety containers within a broad concentration range, and routing away the reaction heat arising in the process to such an extent that the respective ignition temperature is not reached in the present mixture is resolved by having the catalyst element exhibit a flat basic body (2), which is arranged within the area of flow through the recombinator, wherein the surface of the basic body (2) over which the accident atmosphere flows has a varying coverage density with catalyst material (3).

  • Patent number: 6351936
Abstract: A device for elimination of hydrogen including (a) a reactor for reacting hydrogen and oxygen, the reactor being provided with a first inlet line, a second inlet line and an outlet line, the first inlet line admits a hydrogen-containing gas mixture into the reactor, the second inlet line admits a compressed oxygen-containing gas mixture into the reactor, and the outlet line serves to discharge the resultant gas mixture after at least a partial reaction of the hydrogen and oxygen in the reactor, (b) a turbine connected to a shaft which rotates with the turbine, and (c) a compressor which is connected to the shaft, so that the shaft transmits rotational movement generated by the turbine to the compressor, the compressor receives an oxygen-containing gas mixture and provides the compressed oxygen-containing gas mixture, the compressor being joined by a conduit to the second inlet line.

  • Patent number: 6071482
Abstract: A device for the cooling and intermixing of gas from accidental leaks, such as from a nuclear reaction containment, i.e., accident atmospheres, which device prevents stratification and provides improved cooling capacity. The device includes a housing, having an inlet and an outlet and which predefines a flow path for the accident atmosphere. The device has a fan wheel, which is disposed in the housing downstream from the inlet and which is connected to a shaft. The device also has a cooling device which is disposed between the fan wheel and the outlet. A compressor wheel is connected to the shaft at the end thereof which is opposite to the fan wheel. The compressor wheel is disposed between the cooling device and the outlet.
