  • Patent number: 6938529
Abstract: A flap projecting from a glue joint between two paper strips after an on-the-fly supply roll change is shortened by continuously displacing the strips in a straight line, in a travel direction, and at a travel speed along a path such that the flap lies flatly against an outer face of the strips and engaging at least a part of a separating device against the outer face in the path. At least the part of the separating device engaging the strip is displaced in the travel direction at a speed greater than the travel speed such that, when the separating device engages the flap, the flap is bowed out away from the outer face downstream of the separating device. A blade is juxtaposed with the outer face of the strip immediately downstream of the separating device such that the bowed out flap engages and is cut by the blade.

  • Publication number: 20030164076
Abstract: During an unsupported roll change, a flap of paper resulting at the joining point can lead to disruptions in a processing station situated down-stream. According to the invention, the paper web (1) is advanced on a carrying element that is moved faster than the paper web (1), for example, on a suction roll (5). Said carrying element is arranged so close to the continuous paper web (1) that it catches the flap (8) of paper, which is located on the paper web (1), with frictional engagement. The flap (8) of paper is advanced with its rear side on the paper web (1) in a sliding manner and in relation to said paper web (1) in order to cause the leading part of the flap (8) of paper to arch in a wavelike manner. The arched flap (8) of paper strikes a blade (6) and is cut away until it can no longer cause any disruptions.

  • Patent number: 6547179
Abstract: In a flying splice roll changer a splice tail occurs at the splice joint that may induce problems in a downstream processing station. The present invention is directed to shortening of the splice tail (2) by directing the paper web (1) around a deflection roller (3) so that the splice tail (2) is located on the outer face of the roller and extends radially under the action of centrifugal force while being optionally supported by air ejected from blowing nozzles (8, 9). The splice tail is then cut with a blade (7) located in the vicinity of the outer surface of the deflection roller (3) so that only an insignificant length of a few millimeters remains.

  • Publication number: 20010038888
Abstract: A system for treating a porous web with a liquid treatment liquid continuously moves the web along a path sequentially through a saturating station, steaming station, and drying station. A drum in the saturating station engages a back face of the web and a trough closely surrounds the drum and confronts a front face of the web. Seals form between the drum and trough a generally closed and pressurizable chamber through which the web passes and which is supplied with the treatment liquid at superatmospheric pressure so as to force the liquid against only the front face of the web. In the steaming station jets of steam are directed against the back face of the web to heat the web and disperse the treatment liquid throughout the web. The web is heated and dried in the drying station.

  • Patent number: 5690741
Abstract: In known pressure impregnating devices there is a chamber, which continuously narrows in the transport direction, between a cylinder around which the web to be impregnated loops, and the inner wall of a trough containing the impregnating agent. The impregnating agent is supplied to the chamber under high pressure, which is further increased in the chamber by dynamic effects. Sealing problems arise at the inlet and outlet slits as well as at the front faces because of the high pressure. Disruptions in the operation can be created by fluff coming loose from the paper web as well as by impregnating agent penetrating between the sliding faces. The new device is intended to remedy these disadvantages, and is provided with the seals have alternating narrow gaps and wide grooves in the form of a labyrinth seal. The grooves are have drain openings for the impregnating agent flowing through.
