  • Method of cleaning poultry feathers

    Abstract: A method is disclosed for cleaning poultry feathers without the feathers becoming substantially twisted or clotted in lumps and with the feathers retaining its high bulk and tufted state. The method includes a washing of the feathers in a washing chamber with an organic cleaning liquid consisting primarily of chlorinated hydrocarbons, drying the feather material in a drying compartment at a temperature of up to 130.degree. C. with the volume of the drying compartment exceeding that of the washing chamber by from three to ten times and distilling the cleaning liquid to remove solid materials therefrom to prepare the cleaning liquid for reuse in the washing step.
