    Abstract: A thickening agent comprising polyether derivatives of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical or an alkylphenol radical having 10 or more carbon atoms, n is 10 to 100, m is 0 to 25, and p is 1 to 3, and wherein R.sub.2 is an alkyl radical having 8 to 30 carbon atoms. These polyether derivatives are prepared by the gradual addition of a long-chain 1,2-epoxy having a chain length of 10 to 32 carbon atoms at temperatures from 100.degree. to 200.degree. C.
