Patent number: 9535764Abstract: A first network device determines capabilities of resources in a section of a network that is accessible using the first network device. The first network device groups the resources into a resource cluster. The first network device advertises the resource cluster in the network, wherein each of a plurality of network devices advertise a resource cluster associated with sections of the network. A second network device receives a request for providing a service. The second network device groups the request into a plurality of request clusters. The second network device selects at least one resource cluster for providing the service based on information associated with the request clusters and the advertised resource clusters. The second network device allocates resources included in the at least one resource cluster for providing the service based on selecting the at least one resource cluster.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2012Date of Patent: January 3, 2017Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Debojyoti Dutta, Rajendra Shinde, Subrata Banerjee, Ethan Spiegel

Publication number: 20130055091Abstract: Graph-based virtual data center requests are described. In some implementations, a method includes displaying a graph having graphical elements representing network resources. A user can select one of the graphical elements and provide input specifying requirements for a network resource corresponding to the selected graphical element. A virtual data center request can be generated based on the graph and the specified requirements. The virtual data center request can be transmitted to a data center device for processing. In some implementations, the virtual data center request can be an extensible markup language (XML) representation of the graph that includes the specified service requirements. In some implementations, a data center server can receive a graph-based virtual data center request and allocate data center resources based on the virtual data center request.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 23, 2011Publication date: February 28, 2013Applicant: CISCO TECHNOLOGY, INC.Inventors: Debojyoti Dutta, Subrata Banerjee, Ethan Spiegel, Sumeet Singh

Publication number: 20120226799Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for receiving at a provider edge routing device capabilities data representative of capabilities of computing devices disposed in a data center, the capabilities data having been published by an associated local data center edge device, and advertising, by the provider edge routing device, the capabilities data to other provider edge routing devices in communication with one another in a network of provider edge routing devices. The provider edge routing device also receives respective capabilities data from each of the other provider edge routing devices, wherein each of the other provider edge routing devices is associated with a respective local data center via a corresponding data center edge device, and stores all the capabilities data in a directory of capabilities.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 3, 2011Publication date: September 6, 2012Applicant: CISCO TECHNOLOGY, INC.Inventors: Sukhdev S. Kapur, Subrata Banerjee, Ethan Spiegel, Ashok Ganesan, Joshua Merrill, Sumeet Singh

Patent number: 7116669Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for providing unique ATM End System Addresses, in which each new device is assigned a unique address in an ATM network while allowing all new devices performing the PNNI protocol in a selected set (such as all those from a single manufacturer) to be assigned by default to the same peer group.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 2001Date of Patent: October 3, 2006Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Ethan Spiegel, Ashok Chippa, Marek Tomaszewski, Anthony Alles

Patent number: 6611496Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for selecting one particular interface between a pair of adjacent nodes in an ATM network for assignment to a call in that network. The cell rate available on each possible interface is examined and compared with the cell rate expected for the call, and one of the interfaces is selected and assigned responsive to those cell rates. (1) The interface can be chosen which preserves the maximum remaining cell rate for future calls. (2) The interface with the highest-speed available link can be chosen, so long as cell rate capacity is available on that interface for the call.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2001Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Marek Tomaszewski, Ashok Chippa, Ethan Spiegel

Patent number: 6122272Abstract: The invention provides a method and system for selecting routes in a switching network with resource reservation, such as an ATM network. A set of routes are periodically precomputed, so that routes are known between any sending node and any receiving node, subject to resource reservation requirements. Each incoming call has its resource requirements, such as call size, compared with a selected threshold, and if the requirements exceed the threshold, a route is dynamically recomputed for the call. Other aspects of routing may be responsive to the calls' resource requirements. For example, a ratio of required resources with quality-of-service restrictions to required resources without such restrictions may be used to determine whether to reject the call, responsive to the call's resource requirements. The call size may be compared against another selected threshold, and the decision to determine whether to use that ratio to reject the call may be made responsive to comparisons against one or both thresholds.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1997Date of Patent: September 19, 2000Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Marek Tomaszewski, Ashok Chippa, Ethan Spiegel

Patent number: 5649108Abstract: In a connection-oriented communications network, a source node selects one of first and second routing mode flags and a first route to a destination node in response to a connection request, and establishes a connection to a first intermediate node located along the first route. The first intermediate node is responsive to the first flag for extending the connection along the first route if there is an acceptable link in the first route. If there is no acceptable link, it finds a first route section therefrom to the destination node and extends the connection along the first route section if a total cost of links from the source node to the destination node using the first route section is less than a cost threshold, or cranks the connection back to an upstream node if there is none of such route sections.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1994Date of Patent: July 15, 1997Assignee: NEC CorporationInventors: Ethan Spiegel, Tutomu Murase
