  • Publication number: 20230111358
Abstract: A media declassification device receives a media component such as a magnetic hard disk drive, and deletes data stored thereon by physical agitation and dismantling the media component. A cutting blade shears or grinds a perimeter region around a top of the hard disk drive (HDD drive, or simply drive) to a predetermined depth calculated to remove heads from screws and other fasteners securing a metal top panel. Inversion of the drive allows a magnetic media platter upon which data is stored to simply drop out. The magnetic platter is fed into a shredding device for obliteration to sufficiently small particles for declassification, while rare earth magnets are removed from the remaining drive chassis, and the now declassified chassis discarded into a recycling stream.

  • Publication number: 20220305498
Abstract: A media declassification device receives a media component such as an SSD or magnetic disk drive, and eradicates any remnants of sensitive data stored thereon by physical agitation and dismantling the media component. A cutting wheel or die rotates in close tolerance to an interior surface of a cutting chamber, and cutters or protrusions on the cutting wheel engage the media component against a leading edge of the cutting chamber for shearing and/or cutting fragments of the media component into the cutting chamber. A screen at an opposed side of the cutting chamber has apertures that limit a maximum size of particles passing out of the cutting chamber.

  • Patent number: 10251315
Abstract: One feature pertains to cooling of a high density array of non-volatile memory mass storage devices within a computer enclosure. A coolant is moved through the enclosure through two separate air paths, each serving approximately half of the mass storage devices. The two air paths are interleaved in a central duct ported to a frontal and a rear plenum. The central duct contains two groups of fans with a flow axis perpendicular to the plane of the server enclosure but with opposite flow direction with the two groups vertically offset relative to each other. The two paths are separated from each other through dividers. Both paths intake coolant from the cold isle and exhaust the coolant to the hot isle. The non-volatile memory mass storage devices include electromechanical and solid state devices.

  • Patent number: 9395767
Abstract: A side loading enclosure for a rack mount type storage unit is provided. The enclosure provides for easier access to hard disk drives (HDDs) for maintenance and repair as well as the ability to increase the number of HDDs that can be mounted in a single enclosure. The enclosure may include a bottom plate, a pair of side plates, and a pair of end plates. Located within the enclosure are a first row, extending perpendicularly between the pair of end plates, having one or more stacks of HDDs mounted to a first printed circuit board and a second row, extending perpendicularly between the pair of end plates, having one or more stacks of HDDs mounted to a second printed circuit board. The one or more stacks of HDDS in the first row is separate from and located parallel to the one or more stacks of HDDs in the second row.

  • Publication number: 20120150527
Abstract: An emulation system (1) comprises a programming system (2) made up of a laptop computer (2(a)) and a central server (2(b)), an interrogation station (3), and a programmable storage peripheral device (4). The system (1) links with an existing disk storage peripheral device (10) to retrieve characterisation data, and upload it to the central server (2(b)). The laptop computer (2(a)) then retrieves the characterization data and then programs the programmable device (4) to emulate the full functionality of the pre-existing computer storage peripheral (10). The device (4) is programmed by the host computer (2) to fully replicate characteristics including electrical and timing characteristics and command responses. The programmable device (4) does not have a disk drive, the only storage components being solid state non-volatile memory components, in this embodiment flash memory and volatile components including DRAM. The flash components include mostly NAND flash, but also NOR flash.
