Eugene Smotkin has filed for patents to protect the following inventions. This listing includes patent applications that are pending as well as patents that have already been granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

  • Publication number: 20070062820
Abstract: The invention integrates three general operations: the electrolysis of water to produce oxygen and hydrogen gases; the use of the generated oxygen to promote microbial decay of organic substances as in wastewater treatment; and the generation of electrical power by hydrogen-fueled fuel cells. Electrolysis of water provides the molecular oxygen necessary for wastewater treatment, and the hydrogen gas as fuel for a fuel cell to generate power, thus reducing the overall power consumption of the treatment process.

  • Publication number: 20060024551
Abstract: A high throughput screening device for combinatorial chemistry having a plurality of flow channels, wherein a flow channel has a plurality of membrane electrode assemblies, and a switching system that permits a selected membrane electrode assembly in a flow channel to be in a current producing state at any time during operation of the high throughput screening device. This device obtains performance data from each and every array electrode simultaneously and does not require the movement of any electrode during data acquisition. Some application among many possible applications of the device of this invention is in the development and evaluation of catalysts (anode and cathode catalysts) for fuel cells and electrolysis systems. One embodiment of the invention relates to relates to an array fuel cell (FC) that has a multiple inlet gas fed array electrode flow field that permits the evaluation of 25 fuel cell electro-catalyst surfaces simultaneously or in groups.

  • Patent number: 6284402
Abstract: Compositions for use as catalysts in electrochemical reactions are described. The compositions are alloys prepared from two or more elemental metals selected from platinum, molybdenum, osmium, ruthenium, rhodium, and iridium. Also described are electrode compositions including such alloys and electrochemical reaction devices including such catalysts.

  • Patent number: 4793910
Abstract: A multielectrode photoelectrochemical cell in which at least contains two bipolar electrode panels for photoelectrochemical reactions such as water photolysis to produce H.sub.2 O.sub.2 without external bias. In one embodiment of the present invention, a bipolar TiO.sub.2 /Pt multielectrode photoelectrochemical cell was fabricated with five panels in series. The cell permitted unassisted photolytic (Xe lamp) water splitting to produce H.sub.2 and O.sub.2 with H.sub.2 O.sub.2 molar ratio of 2.4/1.
