    Abstract: A digital image processing apparatus and tracking method are provided to rapidly and accurately track a subject location in video images. The apparatus searches for a target image that is most similar to a reference image, in a current frame image in which each pixel has luminance, and other, data, the reference image being smaller than the current frame image, and includes a similarity calculator for calculating a degree of similarity between the reference image and each of a plurality of matching images that have the same size as the reference image and are portions of the current frame image; and a target image determination unit for determining one of the plurality of matching images as the target image using the degree of similarity obtained by the similarity calculator. The similarity calculator calculates the degree of similarity by applying greater weight to the other data than to the luminance data.

    Abstract: A digital image processing apparatus has a tracking function for tracking a location variation of a set tracking area on a plurality of frame images. The digital image processing apparatus includes a similarity calculation unit that calculates a similarity by varying a location of a template on one frame image. The similarity calculation unit calculates a second direction similarity by fixing a first direction location of the template in a first direction on the one frame image and by varying a second direction location of the template in a second direction which is perpendicular to the first direction, and then calculates a first direction similarity by fixing the second direction location of the template at a location where the second direction similarity is the highest and by varying the first direction location of the template in the first direction on the one frame image.

    Abstract: A method of obtaining variance data or standard deviation data for efficiently reducing noise in an image is provided. The method includes (a) dividing an image into a plurality of clusters; (b) checking frequency data of data values of pixels included in each cluster; (c) obtaining a weighted average of the data values of the pixels included in each cluster; (d) obtaining a variance or a standard deviation of the data values of the pixels included in each cluster by using the weighted average; and (e) obtaining variance data or standard deviation data in accordance with weighted averages by using the weighted average and the variance or the standard deviation in each cluster. A digital photographing apparatus is also provided that includes a recording medium storing variance data or standard deviation data for efficiently reducing noise in an image which is obtained in accordance with the above method.
