Patent number: 5518199Abstract: An elongated support roller centered on and rotatable about a horizontal axis radially engages at least one row of takeup rolls coaxial to a takeup-roll axis parallel to the support-roller axis and including at least one central roll and a pair of end rolls axially flanking the central roll. A relatively wide paper web fed to the support roller passes through a slitter between the web supply and the support roller for slitting the web into a plurality of strips including at least one central strip and a pair of end strips flanking the end strip. The central and end strips pass at least partially around the support roller and are wound on the respective central and end rolls. The support roller is rotated about its axis so that the strips wind at least partially around the support roller and at least the central roll is rotated by engagement with the support roll. Respective end-roll periphery drives radially engage the end rolls for rotating same at a greater peripheral speed than the support roller.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1994Date of Patent: May 21, 1996Assignee: Jagenberg AktiengesellschaftInventors: Ewald G. Patent number: 5360180Abstract: A relatively wide strip of paper is slitted longitudinally into a plurality of strips that are fed to a rotating relatively wide main roller. A plurality of pairs of support heads are arranged in two rows extending along the main roller with the rows spaced angularly from each other. Each pair of support heads is spaced in the respective row axially from the other support heads of the respective row and each pair is adapted to engage in an end of a roll core about which a respective one of the strips is wound. A drive rotates the main roller and thereby winds the strips up on the respective roll cores. Two respective vertically movable unloading beams extend axially along the main roller underneath the respective rows of support heads substantially the full length of the main roller. Respective guides extend along each of the beams substantially the full length of the main roller and respective carriages associated with the holder pairs can travel along the guides of the respective beams.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1993Date of Patent: November 1, 1994Assignee: Jagenberg AktiengesellschaftInventors: Ewald G. Patent number: 5271302Abstract: For the cutting of a web a circular cutter is journaled rotatably in a slide which is moved along the cutting line by means of a linear drive. The cutter has a disk-shaped base body journaled freely rotatable which upon its perimeter is provided with pointed cutting blades angled in the sense of rotation. The distance of the base body from the web is chosen such that only the cutting blades but not the base body penetrate the web. Furthermore, the cutting blades are so fashioned and arranged that upon their penetration of the web to the maximal depth of penetration, an uncut portion remains between two cutting blades which upon exit of the subsequent cutting blades is severed by their leading cutting edge.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1991Date of Patent: December 21, 1993Assignee: Jagenberg AktiengesellschaftInventors: Manfred Weis, Karl Thievessen, Ewald G. Patent number: 5265861Abstract: A method and apparatus for the stacking of paper engages the oncoming sheets at their rear ends between clamping elements on upper and lower belts and is so provided that the rear ends are deflected perpendicular to the direction of feed so that the oncoming sheets can effectively shingle over underlying sheets. The clamping portions are engaged at the feeding speed of the sheets at the moment of initial contact, are then slowed down to reduce the speed of the sheets, then release the sheets and then return to the usual speed for the pickup of the next sheet.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1991Date of Patent: November 30, 1993Assignee: Jagenberg AktiengesellschaftInventors: Georg Schaffner, Egbert Most, Ewald G. Patent number: 5221079Abstract: A brake for a sheet feed to a stacking site in which the sheets are engaged by a belt drive from the location at which they are cut from a continuous web. The brake device has an endless belt with a brake stretch parallel to the travel plane of the sheets or declined downward slightly therefrom. The brake has at least one element with a shank over the belt and projecting above the plane at the inlet side of the braking device. The rear edge of the sheet is thus engaged by the shank and the brake belt is decelerated so that the sheet is delivered to the stack at the lower speed.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1992Date of Patent: June 22, 1993Assignee: Jagenberg AktiengesellschaftInventors: Egbert Most, Ingo Becker, Ewald G. Welp, Albrecht Blume

Patent number: 4817883Abstract: The invention comprises a measuring device and method for the pressing zone width pressure per unit area of this zone and/or additional characteristic variables of a roll of material depending on the pressing surface area. A time interval measured directly or indirectly in which the distance a sensor from the roll of material is either above or below a certain limiting value is obtained by a plurality of sensors positioned on the surface of a roller pressed against the roll. The pressing zone width is automatically computed from this time interval and the speed of the web of sheet material and, if necessary, additional information including the radius of the roll, the weight of the roll of material and the like. The winding of the sheet of material is controlled based upon the ascertained pressing zone width.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 1987Date of Patent: April 4, 1989Assignee: Jagenberg AktiengesellschaftInventors: Peter Hoffmann, Gerhard Buschmann, Hans Leichter, Ewald G. Patent number: 4775110Abstract: The apparatus for automatically cutting and rolling up a sheet of material comprises a winder with a least one feed drum. The winder cuts the sheet of material, advantageously first the winder weakens the sheet of material along a cutting line. Then the sheet is cut through or severed by braking. The beginning of a new sheet formed by the cutting is attached to a new roll core by the winder after ejecting the finished rolled up roll and the beginning of the new sheet of material is held fixed during cutting by vacuum on the outer surface of the feed drum.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1987Date of Patent: October 4, 1988Assignee: Jagenberg AktiengesellschaftInventors: Ewald G. Patent number: 4730482Abstract: The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for monitoring the hermeticity of filled containers closed by sealed-on or welded-on covers, or the like. The air or gas cushion present between the cover and the material with which the container is filled, is heated, and the change caused in the position of the cover, by the resulting increase in the volume of air or gas, is monitored, after which the containers which have been indicated as having missing or faulty covers, are removed.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1986Date of Patent: March 15, 1988Assignee: Gasti Verpackungsmaschinen GmbHInventors: Gerhard Cerny, Ewald G. Patent number: 4465243Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the shaftless winding of a web on two support rolls of different diameters, the smaller-diameter support roll having its axis in a horizontal plane above or below the horizontal plane in which the larger-diameter support roll has its axis. Specific pivot angles of the small-diameter support roll relative to the large-diameter support roll are employed in order to make the web-roll density more uniform over the diameter of the web roll and to decrease or increase said density as required.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1982Date of Patent: August 14, 1984Assignee: Jagenberg AGInventor: Ewald G.
