Patent number: 8977478Abstract: A method of verifying a default state of a control parameter in an automobile engine includes checking engine controller performance with the control parameter in both a default state and an alternate state. The results of the tests are then compared to verify which state is the appropriate state for the particular engine being tested. A third engine controller performance check can be made to ensure that the controller and engine perform in a repeatable manner prior to setting the state of the control parameter.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2012Date of Patent: March 10, 2015Assignee: Chrysler Group LLCInventors: Brian Gebby, Travis Hamilton, Fadi S. Publication number: 20130184970Abstract: A method is provided and may include monitoring operation of an engine of a vehicle, determining if the engine is started, and determining if the engine was started via an ignition or via a remote signal. The method may further include controlling operation of the engine at a first temperature if the engine was started via the ignition and controlling operation of the engine at a second temperature—different than the first temperature—if the engine was started via the remote signal. The second temperature may be higher than the first temperature to increase a temperature of coolant circulating within the engine.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 11, 2013Publication date: July 18, 2013Inventor: Fadi S. Patent number: 7644692Abstract: A control method for an internal combustion engine of a vehicle that is used with a variable valve timing (VVT) system to promote lock pin disengagement. The method establishes if the VVT is at a lock pin position, establishes if a lock pin is not disengaged out of an associated recess, and can control the rate of movement of the VVT away from the lock pin position so that the lock pin can be disengaged out of the recess.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 2007Date of Patent: January 12, 2010Assignee: Chrysler Group LLCInventors: Fadi S. Kanafani, Patrick M. Foley

Patent number: 7598845Abstract: A towing load detection system for detecting whether a vehicle is towing an object. The system includes a controller and at least one proximity sensor operable to detect the presence of the object being towed. The controller is operable to cause a vehicle effect when the proximity sensor detects that the vehicle is towing an object.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 2005Date of Patent: October 6, 2009Assignee: Chrysler Group LLCInventor: Fadi S Kanafani

Patent number: 7481738Abstract: This invention provides a method for controlling a gear ratio in an automatic transmission of a vehicle. The method includes detecting a desired engine braking condition associated with the vehicle. Once the engine braking condition is determined, a decay factor is determined for reducing the gear ratio of the transmission. The decay factor maintains the gear ratio for a delayed period of time before gradually reducing the gear ratio over time. After determining the decay factor, the gear ratio of the transmission is controlled in accordance with the decay factor.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2006Date of Patent: January 27, 2009Assignee: Chrysler LLCInventors: Fadi S Kanafani, P Brian McGrath

Publication number: 20080293541Abstract: An automatic transmission control system includes a shift map that includes predetermined ranges of vehicle speeds at which vehicle engine speeds require gear shifts for the automatic transmission based on requests for torque. The predetermined ranges include upper bounds that correspond to gear upshifts and lower bounds that correspond to gear down shifts. A shift map control module varies at least one of the predetermined ranges of vehicle speeds based on at least one vehicle condition that affects movement of the vehicle.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 25, 2007Publication date: November 27, 2008Inventors: Fadi S. Kanafani, Brian P. Gebby, Michael J. Prucka

Patent number: 7353103Abstract: A system for monitoring performance of a fuel system in a vehicle includes a plurality of sensing modules that periodically sense data from a plurality of control systems in the vehicle during a predetermined evaluation period. The system includes a control module that analyzes the data after the evaluation period, generates performance ratings for the control systems based on the data, generates a set of values for the performance of the fuel system based on the performance ratings and a plurality of predetermined fuzzy logic rules, and generates a control signal based on a numerical analysis of the set of values. The system includes an indicator module that indicates in real time whether the performance of the fuel system conforms to a designed performance of the vehicle based on the control signal.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2006Date of Patent: April 1, 2008Assignee: Chrysler LLCInventors: Gary J. Binienda, Hussein A. Dourra, Ali Mourtada, Fadi S. Kanafani

Patent number: 7303505Abstract: A method for controlling a rate of change of speed ratios in a continuously variable transmission (CVT) includes sensing a vehicle speed, sensing an engine speed, and sensing a change in a position of an accelerator pedal. The method includes determining a desired engine speed based on the change in the position of the accelerator pedal, the vehicle speed, and the engine speed. The method includes increasing a target engine speed at a first rate to a predetermined value, wherein the target engine speed corresponds to a speed ratio. The method includes measuring a difference between the target engine speed that is held at the predetermined value and an actual engine speed, and increasing the target engine speed to the desired engine speed at a second rate when the difference substantially equals a predetermined threshold, wherein the second rate is less than the first rate.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2005Date of Patent: December 4, 2007Assignee: Chrysler LLCInventors: Fadi S Kanafani, Jeremy M Smith, P. Patent number: 7097587Abstract: A gear ratio selection method for a transmission in a motor vehicle includes detecting a power request, detecting a vehicle speed of the motor vehicle, and providing an engine speed of the motor vehicle. A first desired engine speed is calculated from a first variogram using the power request and the vehicle speed. A second desired engine speed is calculated from a second variogram using the power request and the vehicle speed. A blend factor is determined from the power request, the vehicle speed, and the engine speed. Finally, a blended desired engine speed is calculated from the first desired engine speed, the second desired engine speed, and the blend factor. The blended desired engine speed is used to determine a gear ratio for the continuously variable transmission.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 2004Date of Patent: August 29, 2006Assignee: DaimlerChrysler CorporationInventors: Fadi S Kanafani, Mark J Duty, Gregory L Ohl

Patent number: 6530265Abstract: A method is provided for detecting a small or gross leak in an evaporative emission control system of an automotive vehicle. The method includes initially purging and then sealing the evaporative emission control system. A vacuum switch coupled to the evaporative emission control system is then monitored for an opening event caused by a loss of a natural vacuum created in the evaporative emission control system. If said opening event is detected, the method determines if a leak check timer has exceeded a first or second predetermined threshold value. If the leak check timer has not exceeded said first predetermined threshold value a first fault code is set indicating that the gross leak has been detected. If the leak check timer has not exceeded the second predetermined threshold value, a second fault code is set indicating that the small leak has been detected. The first threshold value corresponds to an amount of time required for a leak to be detected having a diameter of about 0.070 inches or greater.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1999Date of Patent: March 11, 2003Assignee: DaimlerChrysler CorporationInventors: Gary D. Dawson, William B. Blomquist, Chris J. Booms, Fadi S. Kanafani
