  • Patent number: 8289933
Abstract: A method is described for transmitting information in a communication channel of a wireless communication system in which the communication channel is divided into a plurality of time slots of equal duration and each of the time slots is further sub-divided into multiple sub-slots or resource units. In one illustrative embodiment, the communication channel is divided into time slots according to a time division multiple access scheme. Each time slot is then further code-multiplexed into one or more sub-slots according to a code division multiple access scheme. Each of the sub-slots is therefore capable of carrying a separately coded transmission within the communication channel so that multiple simultaneous transmissions can occur in any given time slot.

  • Patent number: 7808940
Abstract: A method for reducing the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in an OFDM based wireless system is disclosed herein. The reduced PAPR may be achieved by appropriately selecting subpackets for transmission. For example, a scheduler may elect to sequentially transmit the subpackets in an order related to the PAPR of each of the subpackets until at least one of the subpackets is properly received. In one embodiment of the instant invention the order of transmission is selected to be from lowest to highest PAPR.

  • Patent number: 7746953
Abstract: Information is coded and segmented into a plurality of sub-packets. Each sub-packet contains identification information and a one-bit information status flag indicating whether the information is ‘new’ information or ‘continue’ information. The information to be transmitted is then applied to a scheduling algorithm that determines when the information is to be transmitted, how much information is to be transmitted and how many attempts at a successful transmission of the information is allowed. In this manner, the transmission of information can be performed in an asynchronous manner.

  • Patent number: 7564819
Abstract: A method of wireless communication. The method includes the step of transmitting at least one sub-frame associated with a first frame using at least a first wireless resource, such as a channelization code, a channelization tone and/or an allocated power transmit level. The method also includes the step of transmitting at least one sub-frame associated with a second frame. The sub-frame associated with the second frame may use at least a second wireless resource if a non-acknowledgement message associated with the first frame is received. However, if an acknowledgement message associated with the first frame is received, the sub-frame associated with the second frame may use at least the first and second wireless resources. Both first and second frames, and the sub-frames associated thereto may be assigned to a single user to reduce potential delay in real-time wireless services, such as voice, video or wireless gaming, for example.

  • Patent number: 7564827
Abstract: An adaptive incremental redundancy (i.e., Hybrid ARQ) method is described for retransmitting information in a communication channel of a wireless communication system. More specifically, code multiplexing is used within fixed length frames in order to change the number of codes, modulation, and coding on retransmissions to provide the desired redundancy for successful decoding. The operation of adaptive Hybrid ARQ in the code domain also provides finer granularity in which to efficiently transmitting redundancy. In one illustrative embodiment, a method for retransmitting information in a communication channel having a plurality of fixed length frames each divided into a plurality of time slots of equal duration includes the step of code multiplexing a retransmission of a previous transmission within one of the fixed length frames using one or more of a plurality of codes. The number of codes used for the retransmission is variable based on the condition of the communication channel.

  • Patent number: 7499709
Abstract: The performance of closed loop transmit diversity (CLTD) systems may be improved, in accordance with aspects of the present invention, by encoding antenna control information fed back from a mobile station to a base station. As compared to prior art CLTD systems that send antenna control bits in unencoded feedback messages, encoding the antenna control information may result in reduced feedback delays and reduced transmission power. Further, in accordance with some aspects of the present invention, the antenna control bits may be fed back to the base station on a common feedback channel also used to feed back channel quality indication, thus reducing processing overhead.

  • Patent number: 7477876
Abstract: A channel quality feedback method for wireless transmission is described in which the rate for reporting channel quality information from a mobile station to a base station is variable as a function of the presence or absence of a transmission from the base station to the mobile station. In particular, the feedback rate from the mobile station to the base station is increased when the mobile station detects a transmission from the base station. As such, the feedback rate is slower when there is no data transmission for the mobile station and faster when the mobile station is receiving data.

  • Patent number: 7292854
Abstract: A method for transmitting control information in a wireless communication network is provided in which one or more prescribed fields in an existing control channel structure are modified to enable express signaling directly between a base station and at least one mobile station without the need to traverse a backhaul path between the base station and the base station controller. More specifically, prescribed fields in the control channel are modified to carry one or more prescribed message identifiers that convey different types of information, e.g., an identifier for indicating which mobile station is the intended recipient, an identifier for indicating the type of message being transmitted (e.g., broadcast, multicast, etc.), a message identifier indicating the available Walsh space for data transmission, and so on. In this manner, existing control channel structures and formats can accommodate many different signaling functions directed to either single or multiple mobile stations.

  • Patent number: 7280581
Abstract: A method of adaptive Walsh code allocation in a wireless communication system. The method includes the step of each voice user transmitting quality condition signal, such as a pilot signal strength measurement to a corresponding base station. Upon receiving each quality condition signal, the method includes determining a spreading factor for each voice user in response to its quality condition signal. A Walsh code is thereafter allocated to each voice user in response to the determined corresponding spreading factor. Thus, for example, if the quality condition signal of a first voice user is relatively higher than the quality condition signal of a second voice user, the spreading factor allocated to the first voice user should be longer than the spreading factor of the second voice user.

  • Patent number: 7227851
Abstract: A transport channel multiplexing system provides improved use of wireless resources in a shared data channel system. For example, the transport channel system reduces the amount of transport format information required for using a shared data channel, such as the actual number of packet data units in a transport channel of the shared data channel. Additionally, by scheduling or multiplexing coded sub-blocks from one or more transport channels over the shared data channel, the transport channel multiplexing system can provide improved integration with other important features, such as incremental redundancy, fast adaptation to channel conditions and transport channel dependent quality of service (QOS) control, to provide improved system performance.
