  • Patent number: 7172755
Abstract: Polymers containing amino acid and/or polypeptide moieties in their backbones or pendant to their backbones are made by metathesis. A method of making an amino acid or polypeptide containing polymer includes the steps of: providing a amino acid, amino alcohol, or polypeptide-containing monomer; forming a reaction mixture by contacting the monomer with an agent capable of catalyzing the polymerization of the monomer into a polymer; and placing the reaction mixture under conditions that result in the formation of the polymer in reaction mixture.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 9, 2002
Date of Patent: February 6, 2007
Assignee: University of Florida Research Foundation, Inc.
Inventors: Kenneth B. Wagener, Timothy E. Hopkins, James H. Pawlow, Fernando J. Gomez

  • Patent number: 6545110
Abstract: A polymer having a backbone repeat unit that includes at least two metal atoms bonded to each other and only one ethylenically unsaturated functional group wherein the backbone unit preferably has a structure of —C(R3)═C(R3)—[C(R3)(R4)]n—[M(R1)(R2)]a—[C(R3)(R4)]p— wherein n is 0 to 4; a is at least 2; p is 0 to 4; R1 and R2 are each independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl having 4 or fewer carbon atoms, alkenyl having 4 or fewer carbon atoms, or aromatic having one ring; R3 and R4 are each independently selected from hydrogen and lower alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and M is a metal atom selected from at least one of Sn, Ge, Pb, Hg, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cr, Fe, Co, Cu and Zn. The polymer has at least 20 weight percent metal, preferably at least 50 weight percent metal, based on the weight of the polymer.

  • Patent number: 5847064
Abstract: An organometallic polymer having the following moiety: ##STR1## is disclosed. R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently selected from the group of H, alkyl having 30 or fewer carbons, alkenyl having 30 or fewer carbons, and aromatic having one to ten rings; n=0-30; p=0-30; and M is a metal selected from the group consisting of Sn, Ge, Pb, Hg, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, and Zn. Most preferably, M is Sn, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are n-butyl, n is 3, and p is 3. A preferred antibacterial/antifungal composition may be formed by combining the polymer with a suitable carrier.
