Publication number: 20220333602Abstract: A compressor is provided. The compressor includes a first stage portion with a first impeller assembly and a first diffuser assembly, a second stage portion with a second impeller assembly and a second diffuser assembly, and an interstage portion situated between the first stage portion and the second stage portion. The interstage portion includes a directing vane assembly, a collector passage surrounding the directing vane assembly, and a circumferential insertion slot fluidly coupling the collector passage to the directing vane assembly.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 11, 2020Publication date: October 20, 2022Inventor: Florin Iancu

Patent number: 11378088Abstract: A control system is provided that can identify the occurrence of a single surge cycle in centrifugal compressor using various methods and devices. Once the occurrence of a single surge cycle is identified, the control system can take remedial action to respond to the surge cycle, such as by adjusting the position of a variable geometry diffuser, and restore the centrifugal compressor to stable operation.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2010Date of Patent: July 5, 2022Assignee: Johnson Controls Tyco IP Holdings LLPInventors: Steven T. Sommer, Curtis Christian Crane, Florin Iancu, John Trevino, Jr., Robert E. Stabley, Gregory K. Beaverson, Eric J. Smyder, Patrick C. Marks, Rudy Chervil

Patent number: 8567207Abstract: A system for controlling a centrifugal gas compressor (108) in an HVAC, refrigeration or liquid chiller system (100) in which flow of gas through the compressor is automatically controlled to maintain desired parameters within predetermined ranges so as to prevent stall and surge conditions within the system. A variable geometry diffuser (119) in the compressor controls the refrigerant gas flow at the discharge of the compressor impeller wheel (201). This arrangement reduces mass flow, decrease/eliminate flow-reducing stall, and increases the operating efficiency of the compressor at partial load conditions. The variable geometry diffuser control in combination with a variable speed drive (VSD) (120) increases the efficiency of the compressor at partial system loads, and eliminates the need for pre-rotation vanes at the inlet of the centrifugal compressor.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2008Date of Patent: October 29, 2013Assignee: Johnson Controls & Technology CompanyInventors: Steven Trent Sommer, John Trevino, Jr., Florin Iancu, Rudy Chervil, Eric John Smyder

Patent number: 7555891Abstract: A wave rotor apparatus is provided. In another aspect of the present invention, a radial wave rotor includes fluid passageways oriented in a direction offset from its rotational axis. A further aspect of the present invention employs stacked layers of generally radial channels in a wave rotor. Moreover, turbomachinery is located internal to a wave rotor in yet another aspect of the present invention. In yet another aspect of the present invention, a radial wave rotor has an igniter and fuel injector. Correctional passages are employed in still another aspect of the present invention wave rotor.Type: GrantFiled: November 11, 2005Date of Patent: July 7, 2009Assignee: Board of Trustees of Michigan State UniversityInventors: Norbert Müller, Pezhman Akbari, Janusz Piechna, Florin Iancu
