  • Patent number: 4351383
Abstract: Rollers used in roller aprons, which support and guide the metal strand formed in a continuous casting mold, are made of a fixed shaft and elongated roller sleeve sections which are rotatably mounted upon the shaft. The shafts are fastened upon spaced apart rails secured to support plates. Bearings are arranged between the ends of each sleeve section and its shaft. Each bearing comprises a journal type bearing part and a thrust type bearing part. The journal type bearing part includes a cylindrical bronze sleeve non-rotatably fitted within its roller section end. A "Teflon", bronze impregnated, thin wall liner bushing is fitted within a wide recess formed in the interior wall of the outer end of the bronze sleeve to thereby form about one-half of the journal bearing inner wall surface which is arranged in rotatable contact with its shaft.

  • Patent number: 4246812
Abstract: A tapered and curved internal diameter is formed within a tube used as a continuous casting mold by feeding the tube lengthwise along an arc which is tangent to the axis of the spindle of a boring mill having a rotatable boring head arranged within the tube for cutting the interior wall thereof. The boring head and spindle revolve about a fixed axis, but the boring tool or cutter carried by the head is gradually moved transversely of the spindle axis while the tube is advanced along the arcuate path. Thus, the opening within the tube is tapered from one end to the other, and is also curved, wherein the tube is useful as a continuous casting mold and the like.

  • Patent number: 4129175
Abstract: A continuous slab casting mold having spaced apart forward and rear walls joined by opposed side walls to form an open top and bottom, roughly rectangular shaped box-like shape. The mold is cooled so that molten metal is received through the open top and continuously cast into slab while moving through the mold and downwardly out through the open bottom thereof. A downwardly depending extension plate is formed on each of the side walls for extending a considerable distance beneath the mold. The extension plates are provided with hollow interior chambers which communicate through holes to their interior faces for passing water from the chambers through the holes and upon the adjacent side edges of the cast slab immediately as such slab's side edge leaves the bottom of the mold.

  • Patent number: 4124058
Abstract: A continuous casting mold formed of a front wall, a spaced rear wall and side wall members extending between said walls to form an upwardly and downwardly opening, roughly rectangular in cross section casting cavity. The side wall members are moveable towards and away from each other to adjust the width of the casting cavity. The side walls members are formed of interior face plates having side edges which are perpendicular to and in face-to-face contact with their adjacent front and rear wall surfaces, and backing plates having side edges spaced a short distance away from the front and rear wall surfaces. Mounted upon the backing plate side edges are guide blocks, each having an exposed surface co-planar with the edge surface of its adjacent face plate edge for guiding and positioning the side wall members against tilting relative to the front and rear wall interior surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4061077
Abstract: An apparatus for machining a compound curved surface upon a large plate-like metal workpiece comprising an elongated horizontal bed having parallel curved longitudinal edges, a table slidably mounted upon the bed, and having guide strips complementary to and engaging the edges for reciprocating the table horizontally along an arcuate path. A cross-bar is arranged transversely above the bed and table and a support plate having parallel curved edges is mounted upon the bar for slidably moving transversely of the bed. A slide member is mounted upon the support plate and has guide elements engaging the curved edges thereof for movement of the slide member relative to the support plate along an arc whose axis is longitudinal of the bed. A tool member carried by the slide member engages the workpiece, which is fastened to the table, for forming the curved surface thereon as the workpiece is reciprocated longitudinally of the bed, and the tool member is moved transversely of the bed.

  • Patent number: 4005789
Abstract: A trash compactor formed of a box-like body mounted upon wheels to provide a trailer for towing by a vehicle. The body forward and rear ends are open and doors cover each end, with each door being pivotally mounted at its upper end for swinging forwardly and rearwardly. The forward door swings interiorly of the body, as well as forwardly. The body floor is formed with an arcuate shaped portion corresponding to the path of swinging movement of the lower end of the forward door and then with a downwardly sloped portion extending to the rear opening. Trash may be deposited upon the arcuate floor portion and from time to time swept rearwardly and compressed by the interior swinging of the forward door and then stored in the sloped floor area of the body for later dumping by opening the rear door.

  • Patent number: 3987972
Abstract: A closure plate to close the open end of a feed chute for a bottle crusher or the like. The closure plate includes a plurality of sheets of relatively stiff but resilient material each having a plurality of equally spaced apart slits extending radially outwardly from the center thereof toward the outer edge of the sheet to form a plurality of flexible tongue segments with the slits of one sheet being offset relative to the slits of the adjacent sheet so that the tongue segments of one sheet overlap the slits of the adjacent sheet. The closure plate may be formed by casting or molding the sheets individually or by providing core plates and a molding cavity and molding a unitary structure with a layer of the stiff, resilient material on each side of each core plate, then slitting the layers to form the tongue segments and then removing the core plates.

  • Patent number: 3978910
Abstract: A continuous slab casting mold plate formed of an inner face plate fastened face to face to an outer backing plate, and having curved side edges. A number of narrow, parallel grooves are formed in the surface of the face plate, with the grooves covered by the adjacent backing plate surface. The grooves are curved to correspond to the arc of curvature of the plate side edges. A shallow pocket is formed in the backing plate surface at each of the groove ends so that each pocket overlaps all of its adjacent groove ends. A water-carrying passageway through the backing plate communicates each pocket to the exposed backing plate surface for thereby, circulating cooling water through the grooves for continuously cooling the face plate.

  • Patent number: 3964727
Abstract: A continuous casting mold formed of a pair of spaced mold plate members having mold side members arranged between and a distance inwardly of their side edges to form an open-ended mold cavity for continuously casting metal therethrough. Bolts located between the side members and plate edges extend transversely through both mold plate members to loosely hold them together and springs arranged between the bolt ends and plate members resiliently and tightly hold the plate members towards each other and against the mold side members. The bolts are journalled through transverse openings formed in a mounting block which is connected to the adjacent side member by adjustable length connector members.

  • Patent number: 3938745
Abstract: A bottle crusher formed of an enclosed chute into which bottles are dropped, with a motor driven rotating plate arranged at the lower end of the chute to receive and break the bottles. The motor is located below the plate and mounted upon brackets arranged at spaced points around the periphery of the plate. Vanes are formed upon the upper surface of the plate, with the vanes sloped upwardly from the center of the plate toward the edges and with at least one vane terminating considerably inwardly of the plate edge to form a high point for breaking bottles landing upon it. The bottles are broken by the impacting of the vanes and fragments are thrown upwardly by the slope of the vanes for repeated dropping and impacting, as well as for breaking the bottles between the brackets and vanes, so that the crushed fragments of glass fall off the plate for collection below the plate and motor.
