  • Patent number: 7362338
Abstract: A display device having a display matrix (m+2x by n+2x) including an active, e.g., controllable, pixel border located around the edge locations of a frame buffer matrix for improved character viewability. The border can be several pixels wide, e.g., 1<x<5. In one embodiment, the border is two pixels wide and surrounds a liquid crystal display (LCD) matrix area having (m×n) pixels that are controlled by a frame buffer memory. In one embodiment, the pixels of the border are active pixels and each contain a red, a green and a blue subpixel. The pixel border is useful for increasing viewability, e.g., contrast, of characters that are displayed along the edge of the LCD matrix area in a frame buffer region. The invention includes a border attribute register for containing a color attribute and a brightness attribute, in one embodiment.

  • Patent number: 7324072
Abstract: A display device having a display matrix including a pixel border of width x and located around the edge locations of the matrix for improved viewability. The pixels of the border are “dummy pixels” each containing a red, a green and a blue subpixel. Each subpixel has a color filter and is manufactured with a “dummy” transistor which operates to fix open the subpixels thereby allowing a predetermined amount of “white” color brightness through the dummy pixels. The pixel border is useful for increasing viewability of characters that are displayed along the edge of the LCD matrix area in which images are generated from a frame buffer memory.

  • Patent number: 7324093
Abstract: A user interface for a portable electronic device comprising a flexible display panel and a flexible touch sensor. The flexible touch sensor is operable to register a position where contact is made with a surface of the flexible display panel, such that the position of contact registered is translated into a particular command for controlling the portable electronic device. In the present embodiment, the flexible touch sensor is disposed beneath the flexible display panel. As such, the quality of the display is not diminished. In addition, the combination of the flexible display panel and the flexible touch sensor reduces the thickness of the portable computer system.

  • Patent number: 7170500
Abstract: A flip-style user interface for controlling a display on a device such as a computer system, and a method thereof. Layers of flexible material are coupled along one edge in a stack that is coupled to the computer system. A user flips the layers (e.g., leaves) in a manner similar to the way pages in a book are flipped. The separation and/or bending of the leaves caused by the flipping is translated into changes in the display. For example, a different page in a document, calendar, or address book can be displayed as the user moves (separates or bends) the leaves of the user interface. Separation of the leaves can be detected by conducting pads positioned on the top and bottom surfaces of each leaf, such that a pad on the surface of one leaf is in electrical contact with a corresponding pad on the facing surface of the adjacent leaf. The pads are separated when the leaves are separated, breaking the electrical connection and allowing the separation to be detected.

  • Patent number: 7096037
Abstract: Methods of establishing communication sessions from multiple mobile devices as well as managing available conferencing bandwidths is disclosed. One of the methods disclosed includes establishing a communication session between mobile devices and a group of conferencing servers. The method also includes checking the load of each server. Further, the method includes determining whether the load of each server is above a predetermined threshold. Further still, the method includes routing subsequent mobile devices to communicate through specified conferencing servers selected from the group of conferencing servers if the load of particular servers is above a predetermined threshold.

  • Patent number: 6982695
Abstract: The invention provides a method for software contrast control and a portable computer implementing software contrast control. The contrast control is initiated by a single interaction with an input mechanism, for example a pressing of a dedicated contrast control button. The method can be applied more generally to viewing parameters other than contrast such as brightness, color bit depth, color versus monochrome, and screen resolution. The method includes a processor disposed in the portable computer receiving an activation signal from a button or other input mechanism, and displaying viewing parameter adjustment graphics on the image screen. The method continues with the processor receiving a viewing parameter adjustment signal and responding to the adjustment signal by adjusting the viewing parameter levels for the image screen to levels based on the adjustment graphics.

  • Patent number: 6545862
Abstract: A portable computer system (e.g., a palmtop or hand-held computer system) is implemented with an interface module containing circuitry needed to connect with and operate a device such as a display device. The interface module is coupled to the display device. Additionally, the interface module may be coupled to a printed circuit (PC) board of the portable computer system. As such, PC board can thus be designed and manufactured independently of the display device. Furthermore, design variations in the display device can be independently accommodated in the interface module. Thus, the combination of the interface module, the device, and/or the PC board can be universally implemented in different designs of portable computer systems, reducing development time and manufacturing costs.
