  • Patent number: 7136395
Abstract: Headerless (i.e., zero byte) data packets are sent by a compressor over a radio bearer. The radio bearer includes a synchronized wireless link. A sequential timer-based value is associated with each of the headerless data packets. A decompressor generates a header based on the sequential timer-based value associated with a given received headerless data packet. A data packet having a compressed header is sent periodically over the synchronized wireless link. The data packet having the compressed header can also be sent when the compressor detects changes in slowly-varying header fields, in response to feedback received from the decompressor indicating that a decompression context is out of synchronization and/or just before talk spurts occur.

  • Patent number: 6496277
Abstract: An image data flow control and storage facility having a secondary storage, a secondary storage controller, an image input controller, an image output controller and an optional loop-back controller. According to one embodiment, the image input controller, the image output controller and the loop-back controller communicate with the secondary storage controller by way of a PCI-type bus. The secondary storage controller communicates with the secondary storage by way of an SCSI interface. Preferably, the secondary storage controller operates in master mode to transfer blocks of image data directly between the secondary storage and the image output, image input and loop-back controllers. By performing direct image data transfers, the facility of the invention avoids intermediately storing image data in costly DRAM page buffers.

  • Patent number: 6463055
Abstract: An integrated radio telecommunications network which integrates an ANSI-41 circuit switched network and a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) packet data network to support a mobile station which operates in both the ANSI-41 network and the GPRS network. An interworking function interfaces a mobile switching center (MSC) in the ANSI-41 network with a serving GPRS switching node (SGSN) in the GPRS network by mapping circuit switched signaling utilized by the MSC into GPRS packet switched signaling utilized by the SGSN, and mapping GPRS packet switched signaling into circuit switched signaling. An interworking GPRS base station controller interfaces the SGSN with a GPRS/ANSI-136 base station which supports both ANSI-136 operations and GPRS operations. The interworking GPRS base station controller adapts the traffic signaling format utilized by the SGSN into an air interface traffic signaling format utilized by the GPRS/ANSI-136 base station.

  • Patent number: 6125276
Abstract: In those instances wherein inter-exchange handoff of a cellular call occurs, and a mobile station desires to activate an in-call service change with respect to that cellular call among and between a plurality of supported voice and data services, a change of service request message is initiated by a serving mobile switching center and transmitted to an anchor mobile switching center. The request is processed by each switching node to confirm availability of the necessary facilities to support the requested service (on either the existing call circuit or a new call circuit). Once confirmed, the anchor mobile switching center initiates a change of service request reply for transmission back to the serving mobile switching center. These messages could be relayed through one or more intermediate tandem mobile switching centers if necessary. Reconfiguration of the facilities is also performed to support the requested service change.

  • Patent number: 6061549
Abstract: A D-AMPS+ cellular communications air interface is presented wherein a packet data control channel and packet data traffic channel is supported in addition to the conventional digital control channel and digital traffic channel. In particular, the packet data control channel, packet data traffic channel and digital traffic channel support multiple modulation level operation (high versus low). Procedures are provided for intracell and intercell modulation transition of mobile station communications carried by a traffic channel. In particular, these procedures facilitate intracell and intercell modulation transition to a traffic channel using the same level of modulation, as well as intracell and intercell (fall-forward and fall-backward) modulation transition to a traffic channel using a different level of modulation.

  • Patent number: 6006091
Abstract: A method in a cellular telecommunications network of informing the network of a plurality of operating capabilities of a mobile terminal. The method begins with the steps of entering an access (intermediate) state at the mobile terminal and then transmitting a message from the network to the mobile terminal requesting the mobile terminal to transmit information regarding the operating capabilities of the mobile terminal. The capability request may be sent on a paging channel (PCH) or an access response channel (ARCH). This is followed by transmitting a capability report from the mobile terminal to the network, the capability report including the requested information. The capability report may include all of the capabilities of the mobile terminal, or may include a specified capability set.

  • Patent number: 5930710
Abstract: In a TDMA or CDMA cellular telephone network including a plurality of registration areas, and in instances of mobile station cell re-selection between a cell located in a first registration area and a cell located in a second registration area, the mobile station processes control or pilot channel signal strength measurements in view of both a conventional reselection hysteresis and an additional registration hysteresis. Reselection is performed by the mobile station when the control or pilot channel signal strength measured with respect to the second registration area cell exceeds the control or pilot channel signal strength measured with respect to the first registration area cell by the sum total of both the reselection hysteresis and the registration hysteresis.

  • Patent number: 5839070
Abstract: A system for providing seamless interoperability for a multi-hyperband capable mobile station roaming between cells within a cellular telecommunications network having a mobile switching center and a plurality of base stations that transmit and receive radio signals in a plurality of frequency hyperbands. The system comprises a plurality of location and verification devices within each of the plurality of base stations, Each of the plurality of location and verification devices operates in a different one of the plurality of frequency hyperbands. The system builds a neighbor list of candidate cells for handoff that includes cells operating in different ones of the plurality of frequency hyperbands, identifies the best candidate cell for communication with the mobile station, and verifies the presence of the mobile station in the identified candidate cell.

  • Patent number: 5797096
Abstract: A system and method for maintaining control channel mode (CCM) status information for a mobile station in a cellular telecommunications network having a mobile switching center (MSC) and a plurality of base stations and cells. Following reselection of a new cell by the mobile station, or selection of a new analog or digital operating mode, the system notifies the MSC of the mobile station's identity, current CCM, and a base station identification. The MSC stores the CCM information and utilizes it for paging and for delivery of short message service (SMS) messages when the control channel is digital. The MSC also transmits the CCM information to a home location register (HLR) whenever the CCM changes. Upon loss of the CCM status information by the MSC, if an incoming call is received for the mobile station prior to a registration by the mobile station, the system retrieves the assigned CCM status information from the HLR.
