    Abstract: A synthesis gas cooler has concentric water walls to provide for heat transfer to a fluid in the water wall tubes. The inner water wall is concentric with the cooler shell and has a gas tight inlet connection for introducing hot synthesis gas. The inlet is located at the top of the shell. The bottom of the shell contains a body of water for quenching entrained solids which are carried with the synthesis gas, and there is a baffle to direct the flow of synthesis gas back up in the annulus between the two concentric water walls. The annulus has a closed upper end except for an outlet for the synthesis gas which is located near that end of the annulus. Also, there may be soot blowers along the length of the water walls to keep the heat transfer surfaces clean.

    Abstract: This is a continuous process for producing ammonia synthesis gas and includes the partial oxidation of particles of solid carboniferous fuels entrained in nitrogen. In the process, air is separated into high pressure nitrogen and substantially pure oxygen. A first stream of said nitrogen is used as a safe pneumatic vehicle in a grinding and transport operation which introduces ground, finely divided solid carbonaceous fuel into a venturi injector where the particles of solid fuel are dispersed in a second stream of said nitrogen. The solid fuel-nitrogen gaseous dispersion is then reacted with a free-oxygen containing gas preferably in the absence of supplemental H.sub.2 O, other than any moisture normally found in the reactants, in a freeflow partial oxidation synthesis gas generator. The nitrogen stream serves as a carrier for the particles of solid carbonaceous fuel and as a temperature moderator in the gas generator.     Abstract: Preparation of a solid fuel-water slurry suitable for use as feed to a partial oxidation zone for the production of synthesis gas by forming a mixture of finely-divided solid fuel and water, heating the mixture to a temperature above 300.degree. F. under pressure sufficient to maintain water in the liquid phase, cooling the mixture and adding a surface active agent and sufficient water to form a mixture having a water content between 40 and 50 weight %.
