Patent number: 4995886Abstract: A high voltage circuit interrupter, having telescopic tubular insulating and conducting casings, contains an expulsion end sealing construction which hermetically seals and controls the expulsion rate of the interrupter. The expulsion end includes a sleeve, a thin, rupturable diaphragm affixed against the sleeve by cyanoacrylate cement, and an end cap. Epoxy cement is applied into the cap so that the space between the diaphragm and the end cap are filled forming a sealant layer therebetween. A main ferrule secures the strain element, and an auxiliary ferrule secures both the main ferrule and the end cap onto the end of the tubular insulating casing.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 1990Date of Patent: February 26, 1991Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Frank L. Cameron, George A. Smith

Patent number: 4766408Abstract: A current limiting fuse with an indicator characterized by a generally tubular, electrically insulating casing having a pair of tubular terminal members at opposite ends of the casing. A fusible element extends between the terminal members and through the casing. An indicator plunger extends from one end terminal member and is movable between a retracted and extended positions and is biased in the extended position. A restraining wire extending between the other end terminal member and the indicator plunger. The wire having a smaller diameter portion in the casing. An electrically conductive grease disposed between the plunger and the tubular terminal member.Type: GrantFiled: September 3, 1987Date of Patent: August 23, 1988Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Frank L. Cameron, George A. Smith

Patent number: 4626817Abstract: A current limiting fuse with less-inverse time-current characteristics characterized by a tubular housing having electrical terminals at each end, a fusible structure in the housing and interconnected between the terminals, the fusible structure comprising first fusible portions of silver alloy and second fusible portions of tin alloy intermediate the first fusible portions, and an arc-extinguishing filler around the second fusible portion.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1985Date of Patent: December 2, 1986Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Frank L. Patent number: 4520337Abstract: A high voltage circuit interrupter characterized by a tubular insulating casing that encloses a tube of boric acid forming an elongated bore. The bore includes bore portions of smaller and larger diameter. An elongated conductor is disposed in the bore and forms a clearance space therewith. Fusible means extend between the enlarged conductor and a fuse terminal. Upon fusion of the fusible means the larger end portion of the conductor is retracted into the smaller bore portion while maintaining a clearance space therewith, so that a minimal clearance space between the smaller bore portion and the enlarged end portion of the conductor provides adequately high water vapor pressure to extinguish an electric arc generated by fusion of the fusible means.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1984Date of Patent: May 28, 1985Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Frank L. Patent number: 4195282Abstract: A charge redistribution circuit for pulse code modulation encoding suitable for use in apparatus for encoding voice in a companded code to maximize signal-to-noise performance. The companded code is the fifteen segment approximation of the .mu.255 compression law, wherein each segment contains 16 equal size steps. The circuit includes a single binary weighted capacitor array for the generation of both segment and step boundaries of voice being encoded. Each capacitor in the array has a pair of opposed plates, one plate of each capacitor being commonly coupled together. The circuit further includes a binary comparator having a first input adapted to be coupled to a reference bias potential and a second input coupled to the commonly coupled plates. First switching means connect and disconnect the commonly coupled plates to and from ground potential. Second switching means selectively connect a first common line to an input analog voice signal or to ground potential.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1978Date of Patent: March 25, 1980Assignee: GTE Laboratories IncorporatedInventor: Frank L. Patent number: 4114128Abstract: An indicating composite sectionalized fuse is provided having a high-current interrupting section, and a mechanically-connected detachable low-current interrupting section in series therewith, with the low-current interrupting section including a pull-away indicating fuse-link cable, which indicates externally a blown condition of the fuse. The low-current interrupting section is replaceable, following a low-current interruption, which has no effect upon the high-current interrupting section, the latter remaining intact and may be further used. During high-current interruption, both sections are fused, and collectively contribute together to a quick interruption of the connected electrical circuit, again there being an external indicated condition of the blown condition of the fuse by an ejection of the fuse-link cable.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1975Date of Patent: September 12, 1978Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Frank L. Patent number: 4099153Abstract: A current limiting fuse of the general purpose type utilizes a mandrel which has a plurality of longitudinally oriented and radially spaced ceramic rods around which is wound a fuse element. Gas evolving clamps are disposed along the mandrel to hold the fuse element against the rods of the mandrel. This arrangement tends to maintain the spacing of any given portion of the wound fuse element relative to the other portions thereof. In addition, the gas evolving material evolves arc quenching gas in localized regions between the clamps and the rods during a fusing operation. The pressure of the gas as it is expelled from the localized regions tends to prevent the formation of fulgurites in the regions after the fusing operation has been completed. A fulgurite if formed would enhance the opportunity for a restrike of the arc which is undesirable.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1976Date of Patent: July 4, 1978Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Frank L. Patent number: 4035755Abstract: An expulsion type fuse is taught which has an opening in the bottom thereof from which hot gases may exit during a fusing operation. The hot gases are provided to a condenser which is disposed adjacent the exit of the expulsion fuse. The disposition of the condenser relative to the fuse is such that none of the gas escapes to any region outside of the expulsion fuse other than the condenser. The condenser has a central axial opening around which is an annularly disposed copper screen. Around the outer periphery of the copper screen is disposed a relatively thin layer of plastic material which may rupture because of pressure or temperature. Around the plastic material is disposed quartz sand. All of the above are disposed within a cylindrical container. When gas exits from the expulsion fuse it is cooled by the copper wire. This causes the precipitation of water from the hot gas.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1975Date of Patent: July 12, 1977Assignee: Westinghouse Electric CorporationInventor: Frank L. Cameron

Patent number: 4008452Abstract: A current limiting fuse and an expulsion fuse are disposed in side by side relationship on a common supporting structure. One terminal of each fuse are interconnected electrically. The other terminals of each fuse are spaced by a predetermined insulating gap. An external circuit which includes a voltage source and a load to be protected is connected in series circuit relationship with the terminals of the expulsion fuse. The current limiting fuse is only disposed in circuit relationship with the external circuit for current limiting purposes when the expulsion fuse blows because of a relatively high value of fault current. This causes gaseous products to be directed from an internal portion of the expulsion fuse to a region between the unconnected terminals of both fuses.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 1975Date of Patent: February 15, 1977Assignee: Westinghouse Electric CorporationInventor: Frank L.
