  • Patent number: 6370183
Abstract: A rake receiver with a finger for each of a plurality of multipath components displaced in time has provision for predicting short-term variations in the strength of each component and adapting the coefficients of each finger accordingly, thus reducing the error rate, particularly in high-data-rate applications in a time-variant environment.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 26, 1998
Date of Patent: April 9, 2002
    Assignee: Nortel Networks Limited
Inventors: Paul Newson, Frank Martin van Heeswyk
  • Patent number: 6333926
Abstract: A CDMA modem with dynamically allocatable demodulation and modulation, encoding/interleaving and decoding/de-interleaving for multiple resources users is provided. Each component is individually configurable to function as any one of various physical layer channel types for one or more different CDMA standards.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 11, 1998
Date of Patent: December 25, 2001
    Assignee: Nortel Networks Limited
Inventors: Frank Martin Van Heeswyk, Paul Newson
  • Patent number: 6333947
Abstract: Systems and methods for cancelling interference in received CDMA signals due to known components in the received signals which have been digitized to form a composite digitized baseband signal, for example due to pilot channel components in received CDMA IS-95 3G compliant signals which would otherwise interfere with the detection of unknown data streams. The pilot channel signals are detected, and an estimate of the air interface for each pilot channel signal is made. The pilot channel signals are then passed through a respective model of the air interface, and the resulting output is subtracted from the composite digitized baseband signal, thereby removing interference due to the pilot channel signals.

  • Patent number: 6320898
Abstract: A CDMA base station servicing a plurality of mobile stations in a plurality of sectors monitors the reverse-link signal strength received by each antenna for each mobile station, and accordingly determines an optimum combination of antennas for forward-link transmission to each mobile station, whereby transmission to each mobile station may be accomplished with lower power, and whereby the dropped-call rate is reduced.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: November 20, 2001
    Assignee: Nortel Networks Limited
Inventors: Paul Newson, Frank Martin van Heeswyk
  • Patent number: 6298050
Abstract: Systems and methods for cancelling interference in received CDMA signals due to signals of users involved in position location in the received signals which have been digitized to form a composite digitized baseband signal which would otherwise interfere with the detection of other user's data streams. The particular user's signals are detected, and an estimate of the air interface for that user is made. The user's signals are then passed through a model of the air interface, and the resulting output is subtracted from the composite digitized baseband signal, thereby removing interference due to that user's signals.
