Abstract: A convolute sidewall container of paperboard or the like having an outwardly rolled top rim and a closed bottom, the container comprising a one-piece sidewall blank of generally rectangular shape having top and bottom edges, first and second side edges, and four corner edges. The bottom edge and preferably the top edge are defined by sinusoidal undulating edge portions which facilitate the formation of a uniformly crimped radially inwardly extending flange at the bottom edge and the outwardly rolled top rim at the top edge. A blanking die pattern for cutting the one-piece sidewall blanks and a method of forming such blanks is also disclosed.

The open-topped container is subsequently conveyed through one or more finishing stations for appropriate finishing of the container's open end in order to ready the container for filling and acceptance of a closure. As the open ended container is conveyed incrementally to and received at one or more finishing stations, the bottom of the container is gripped while appropriate modifications are made to the top burner.

Abstract: An improved apparatus for supplying fluid such as liquid lubricant or glue to a partially assembled container during assembly thereof. The apparatus employs a flexible tube pump driven by a reciprocatable frame or structure on a container assembling machine via a lever arm acting through a one-way clutch assembly to thereby rotate the tube pump rotor in successive increments of rotation of less than 360.degree.. In one embodiment, apparatus is disclosed in which a liquid dispensing head is reciprocated into and out of engagement with a partially assembled container by means of a reciprocatable frame and actuation of the flexible tube pump is obtained after such engagement in response to additional movement of the frame relative to the liquid dispensing head. In another embodiment, means are disclosed for preventing dispensing of liquid when a container will not be present at the liquid dispensing station.

Abstract: A container is disclosed comprising a generally cylindrical or conical tubular sidewall; a bottom closure secured to a lower portion of the sidewall to seal the bottom end of the container; and an inwardly disposed rim being circumferentially continuous about the periphery of the top end of the container and comprising an upper end portion of the sidewall extending inwardly, downwardly, and outwardly in such a fashion that the edge of the inner surface of the upper end of the sidewall is in a position which is higher than the lowest portion of the rim. The incorporation of a top closure with such a container is also disclosed.

Abstract: A method is provided for forming a container having a tubular sidewall and a bottom closure member secured to the sidewall. The method includes forming a bottom member having a bottom panel and a depending skirt with the free end of the skirt having a diameter sized relative to the sidewall such that during wrapping of a sidewall forming blank about a mandrel the skirt presents minimal or no resistance to the wrapping of the sidewall blank about the mandrel. After the sidewall blank is wrapped about the mandrel, the bottom member is reformed, whereby the skirt substantially conforms to the shape of the container sidewall, and simultaneously the sidewall and bottom closure member are secured together.

Abstract: An apparatus is provided for forming a container having a rolled rim on the free end thereof. The apparatus includes means for forming a container blank having a bottom member secured in one end thereof wherein the formed container blank is suitably transferred to rim forming means wherein a rolled rim or bead is formed on the free end thereof by the forming means. The container blank forming means includes a bottom forming means and means for feeding side walls in a heated condition to the forming means. Also provided is means for wrapping a side wall blank to form the container blank side wall and means for securing the bottom member to the side wall. The means for forming the rim on the container blank includes a forming head which cooperates with a ring movably mounted on a container receiving receptacle to form the rolled rim on the container blank.

Abstract: An apparatus for forming a container is provided wherein the container is comprised of a side wall having a top bead and also a bottom member secured to the side wall with the side wall being formed from a blank which is wrapped with convolute form having side marginal portions overlapped and secured together. The apparatus includes means for forming the bottom member from a bottom member blank with the formed bottom member being carried by conveying means to various stations of the apparatus. A side wall feeder feeds side wall blanks through a side wall heater and to the conveying means for conveying thereby. A side wall wrapper is provided to wrap the side wall blank in convolute form about a mandrel and bottom member and secure overlapping marginal portions.

The apparatus includes an arrangement for forming the bottom member from a blank with the apparatus including a forming die through which the blank is passed by use of a plunger arrangement with the die having a plurality of different size forming areas which cooperate with the plunger arrangement to form the fold lines and skirt. Means feed the blanks to the die and plunger arrangement for forming after which the bottom member is secured to the sidewall to form a container.

A circular disc is secured to one end of the side wall to form an end closure. Leakage at the junction between the side wall seam and the disc is eliminated by positioning a bead of sealant material at this junction.
