    Abstract: A method for determining initial or muzzle velocity for a rapid fire gun se barrel becomes eroded with use. A gauge simulating a rotating band of a projectile is inserted into a gun barrel and the depth of penetration is measured to provide a projectile seating dimension. This dimension is converted into a velocity loss value by using an empirically derived chart. This velocity loss value is subtracted from the initial velocity value for a new gun barrel to provide a corrected initial velocity which is used as an input to a computing unit of a gun fire control system.
