  • Patent number: 6582211
Abstract: A compressor assembly includes a shell which defines a discharge chamber. A discharge valve assembly is attached to the shell in communication with the discharge chamber. The discharge valve assembly includes a stamped or coined valve seat, a drawn tubular element and a stamped valve member. The stamping, drawing and coining operations used to manufacture the discharge valve assembly significantly reduce the manufacturing costs for the discharge valve assembly.

  • Patent number: 6575710
Abstract: A capacity control system has a valve which closes off the inlet to one or more of the cylinders in a multicylinder compressor. The valve is motivated by fluid at discharge pressure which reacts against a piston to close the inlet. An orifice is positioned in the flow of the fluid at discharge pressure to control the velocity of the piston to reduce impact loading and improve reliability.

  • Patent number: 6176686
Abstract: A scroll-type refrigeration compressor is disclosed which incorporates an efficient, reliable, low cost modulation system employing a single actuator to effect switching between full and reduced capacity operation. The modulation system of the present invention includes an elongated member movably supported on the non-orbiting scroll which operates to ensure simultaneous opening and closing one or more unloading passages thus avoiding the possibility of even transient pressure imbalances between opposed compression pockets during operation of the compressor. In one embodiment, the elongated member has the opposite ends interconnected by springs and is rotatably movable to effect the intended modulation. In another embodiment, the elongated member is movable generally along a radial line of the non-orbiting scroll member.

  • Patent number: 6164334
Abstract: A valve assembly has a discharge valve member and a suction valve member. One of these valve members includes a reed valve. The reed valve has a tab which is secured to the valve plate by drive studs prior to assembly of the valve assembly to the compressor. The drive studs include a first set of ridges along the shank of the stud to create an interference with the bore in the valve plate. This eliminates the need to access both sides of the stud to secure the stud. The drive studs included a second set of ridges on the surface of the head which contacts the reed valve. A portion of these ridges extend into the mounting hole in the reed valve and a portion of these ridges are compressed during assembly of the stud. These second set of ridges permit the correct positioning of the reed valve to eliminate build tolerances and the retention of this properly positioned reed valve during assembly of the valve assembly to the compressor.

  • Patent number: 6116867
Abstract: A scroll-type compressor having a capacity modulation system of the delayed suction type is disclosed which incorporates a valving ring rotatably supported on one of the scroll members. Seals are provided acting between the valving ring and scroll member which serve to effect a fluid tight sealing relationship therebetween when the compressor is operating in a full capacity mode thus reducing the need for maintaining tight tolerances during manufacture of the valving ring.

  • Patent number: 5803716
Abstract: A scroll machine has an intermediate pressure cavity which is operable to open and close a leakage path between the discharge zone and the suction zone of the scroll machine. The leakage path is closed when intermediate pressurized fluid is supplied to the cavity and the leakage path is open when the cavity is open to the suction zone of the compressor. A valve (102) which can be mechanical or electrical is used to open and close a passageway extending between the cavity and the suction zone of the machine. A high pressure relief valve is incorporated into the design of the compressor to prevent slugging. The high pressure relief valve will release the intermediate pressurized fluid to suction and/or discharge when the pressure within the intermediate pressure cavity exceeds a predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 5649816
Abstract: A heat shield is disposed in a hermetic compressor between a discharge port and a local area on an interior surface of the outer shell toward which relatively hot compressed gas is directed. The local area of the outer shell is thereby insulated from the high temperature of the discharge gas and the noise and vibrations that are often associated with hot gas impinging on the shell.

  • Patent number: 5588819
Abstract: A scroll-type apparatus includes a radial compliant drive. The radial compliant drive is achieved by using a set of corresponding flat driving surfaces with one of the drive surfaces being located on a drive bushing and the other being located on a crankshaft. The drive bushing is provided with a pair of flat drive surfaces with each flat drive surface of the drive bushing capable of mating with the drive surface of the crankshaft in a different geometrical fashion to provide two different radial driving loads.

  • Patent number: 5538408
Abstract: A scroll-type machine has a motion controlling member for preventing relative rotation between a first and a second scroll member while allowing relative orbiting motion therebetween. The scroll-type machine includes a novel arrangement of a spring or other flexible member for biasing the motion controlling member in a specific direction. • Patent number: 5464332
Abstract: A hermetically sealed compressor has a fan for cooling the motor of the compressor. The compressor utilizes the refrigerant vapor inside the hermetic shell to cool the motor. The fan is attached to the end of the motor rotor and crankshaft to circulate the suction gas of the compressor around and through the motor rotor and motor stator to absorb heat and then directs the suction gas against the hermetic shell in a spiralling motion for transferring heat to the shell which in turn transfers heat to the atmosphere.
