Publication number: 20030108088Abstract: A novel and improved method for implementing a high-transmission-rate over-the-air interface is described. A transmit system provides an in-phase channel set and a quadrature-phase channel set. The in-phase channel set is used to provide a complete set of orthogonal medium rate control and traffic channels. The quadrature-phase channel set is used to provide a high-rate supplemental channel and an extended set of medium rate channels that are orthogonal to each other and the original medium rate channels. The high-rate supplemental channel is generated over a set of medium rate channels using a short channel code. Patent number: 6519456Abstract: A base station architecture splits modem functionality into modulator and demodulator entities, each configured to handle multiple telephone calls. A high-speed digital bus with associated routing elements connects multiple-channel (i.e., multiuser) modulator and demodulator elements. The modulator and demodulator elements may be physically separated, residing on different cards, and even different shelves, within the base station. During softer handoff between forward channels of the base station, multiple modulator elements use the address of a demodulator element in communication with a mobile subscriber unit. A base station controller broadcasts forward-link frames to all modulator elements. The multiple modulator elements simultaneously receive forward-link frames from the base station controller. The multiple modulator elements filter these forward-link frames and accept only those to be transmitted to the particular mobile subscriber unit in communication with the demodulator element.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1998Date of Patent: February 11, 2003Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Franklin P. Patent number: 6493331Abstract: In some aspects, each cell in the communications system can be designed to operate in accordance with a set of back-off factors that identify the reductions in peak transmit power levels for the channels associated with the back-off factors. The back-off factors are defined to provide the required power to a large percentage of the users while reducing the amount of interference. In some other aspects, the cells operate using an adaptive reuse scheme that allows the cells to efficiently allocate and reallocate the system resources to reflect changes in the system. A reuse scheme is initially defined and resources are allocated to the cells. During operation, changes in the operating conditions of the system are detected and the reuse scheme is redefined as necessary based on the detected changes. For example, the loading conditions of the cells can be detected, and the resources can be reallocated and/or the reuse scheme can be redefined.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2000Date of Patent: December 10, 2002Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Jay R. Publication number: 20020101937Abstract: A predistortion technique for high power amplifiers includes an adaptive predistortion algorithm that operates independently of data samples to write a set of complex gain values, or predistortion parameters, to a lookup table. The algorithm may be processor-driven. The gain values are taken from the lookup table and multiplied by a complex digital baseband waveform. The gain values may first be subjected to interpolation. The downconverted output of the amplifier is measured to gauge the efficacy of the predistortion. Based on the effect of the predistortion upon the ratio of in-band power to out-of-band power, decisions are made on the set of predistortion parameters for the next iteration of the algorithm. The algorithm runs continuously, perturbing parameters and adapting the predistortion functions accordingly in an effort to continually reflect instantaneous amplitude-modulation and phase-modulation relationships that may change over time with temperature variation or component aging.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 26, 1998Publication date: August 1, 2002Inventors: FRANKLIN P. Patent number: 6426960Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting voice and data in a code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless telecommunications system is described. In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, a base station transmits voice information at a voice transmit power and data at a data transmit power that is equal to a maximum transmit power minus the voice transmit power. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, each base station reports the voice transmit power to a base station controller in 20 ms intervals. The base station controller responds by calculating an available data transmit capacity, and by forwarding data to each base station equal to the available data transmit capacity. Each base station then transmits all voice data at the current voice transmit power, and data at the current data transmission power. If the amount of data received exceeds the capacity provided by the current data transmission power, some data is not transmitted.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1997Date of Patent: July 30, 2002Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventor: Franklin P. Publication number: 20020097515Abstract: A method and apparatus for a variable mode multi-media data object storage device. Large digital objects can be quickly downloaded in approximately a minute. The digital objects can be utilized or played back at real-time speeds. Utilization or playback consumes minimal power, allowing the disk to support portable devices operating on battery power. The storage device uses multiple disk rotation speeds to support multiple modes of operation. The storage device operates in at least two modes of disk drive operation, supporting a fast platter rotation speed for writing and a slower platter rotation speed for reading. The multiple rotation speeds operate in conjunction with a head assembly configured with at least one head for reading and multiple heads for writing. When writing, the disk spins at the faster rotation speed. When in utilization or playback mode, the disk spins at the slower, power conserving rotation speed.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 24, 2001Publication date: July 25, 2002Inventors: Franklin P. Patent number: 6339611Abstract: The information signals are transferred to end users, customers, or service subscribers using at least two signal sources, generally satellites, and polarized radiation. Two polarization modes are employed, with the preferred modes being left-hand and right-hand circularly polarized radiation, although other polarization modes may be employed. The total number of channels can be divided among the polarization modes and transferred to end users either through the use of polarization switching in the receivers to selectively switch between the satellites, or by switching elements in the satellites (sources) to switch between polarization modes used for transmission.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1999Date of Patent: January 15, 2002Assignee: Qualcomm Inc.Inventors: Franklin P.
