  • Patent number: 5529667
Abstract: In an improved process for recovering ethylene oxide from an aqueous ethylene oxide solution further containing formaldehyde is provided wherein the impure aqueous ethylene oxide solution is introduced into a distillation zone as a feed stream and undergoes distillation therein to form an ethylene oxide product sidestream and an aqueous bottoms product, water is added to the distillation zone to absorb formaldehyde vapor into a liquid phase and combines with the formaldehyde vapor to form an apparent azeotrope, and removing the apparent azeotrope from the column, the improvement is that all or part of the water is a recycled aqueous stream originating from the aqueous bottoms product and introduced to the distillation zone above the feed stream.

  • Patent number: 4883515
Abstract: A continuous process is disclosed for separating components of a hydrocarbon gas stream which are selected from the group consisting of methane, ethane, higher saturated hydrocarbons, and mixtures thereof by countercurrently contacting the hydrocarbon gas stream with a physical solvent selected from the group consisting of:(1) paraffinic solvents having molecular weights ranging from 75 to 140 and UOP characterization factors ranging from 12.0 to 13.5, these factors being independent of the aromatic content of the paraffinic solvents,(2) naphthenic solvents having molecular weights ranging from 75 to 130 and UOP characterization factors ranging from 10.5 to 12.0, these factors being independent of the aromatic content of the naphthenic solvents, and(3) benzene and toluene,to produce an overhead stream which is rich in methane and a rich solvent bottoms stream and then recovering the lean physical solvent and a C.sub.

  • Patent number: 4339596
Abstract: In one embodiment, this invention provides a process for converting a dilute aqueous filtrate byproduct stream from adipic acid manufacture into a concentrated methanolic solution which does not solidify at ambient temperatures. In another embodiment, this invention provides an improved process for the separation and recovery of byproducts associated with the isolation of C.sub.4 -C.sub.6 dicarboxylic acids contained in a waste byproduct stream derived from an adipic acid manufacturing operation involving nitric acid oxidation of a cyclohexanone/cyclohexanol feedstream in the presence of a catalyst.
