  • Patent number: 9957992
Abstract: A trailing end of a leading metal strip is joined to a leading end of a trailing metal strip by first overlapping the leading end of the trailing strip with the trailing end of the leading strip and then clinching the ends together at the overlap by pressing at least one punch of a joining tool into one of the strips at the overlap sufficiently to complementarily deform both of the strips. The thickness of the leading and trailing ends is measured and a depth of engagement of the punch into the strips is controlled in accordance with the measured thickness.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 12, 2015
Date of Patent: May 1, 2018
    Assignee: BWG BERGWERK-UND WALZWERK-MASCHINENBAU GMBH

  • Publication number: 20160136717
Abstract: A trailing end of a first metal strip is connected to a leading end of a second metal strip in a strip-treatment plant by first forming at least one of the strips as a cold-rolled, non-annealed metal strip and then superposing the trailing end of the first strip and the leading end of the second strip at an overlap. Then the strips are connected at the overlap at at least 20 connection points per meter of the strips by clinching without through cutting.

  • Publication number: 20150121678
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for connecting an end of a first metal strip to the beginning of a second metal strip, in particular in strip treatment installations, wherein the end of the strip and the beginning of the strip are positioned one on top of the other to form an overlap and are connected to one another at a number of connecting points in the region of the overlap, characterized in that the connecting points are produced by means of clinching.

  • Patent number: 8109428
Abstract: A method of splicing a trailing end of a downstream metal strip to the leading end of an upstream metal strip. The method has the steps of overlapping the leading end of the upstream strip with the trailing end of the downstream strip, and thereafter friction welding the overlapping ends together at a plurality of spots at which respective spot welds are thereby formed.
