  • Patent number: 4369734
Abstract: A varnishing assembly in a printing press for applying a layer of varnish to a sheet on a press cylinder. The assembly includes a varnish fountain made up of a tray and fountain roller with an applicator roller interposed between the fountain roller and the cylinder. Storage tanks are respectively provided for varnish, fresh detergent and used detergent. The tray is equipped with an outlet line and an inlet line for drainage and filling. The outlet line has a two-position shut-off valve and the inlet line has a pump and pump drive motor. A two-position, three-connection drain valve is provided having an inlet connected to the outlet line of the tray end outlets connected to the varnish tank and the used detergent tank. The system also includes a two-position, three-connection fill valve having inlets connected to the varnish tank and the fresh detergent tank and an outlet connected to the tray inlet line.

  • Patent number: 4210078
Abstract: A mechanism for sorting sheets from a printing press to assure proper color density and to assist in making corrective adjustment which includes a main conveyor for normally conducting sheets to a main delivery pile and having a transfer station. An auxiliary conveyor extends from the transfer station to an auxiliary delivery pile. A scanning device is arranged upstream of the main conveyor for responding to the color density of the printed image on a passing sheet. A comparator produces a control signal when the color density is above or below tolerance, signifying a sub-quality sheet. Mechanism at the transfer station is triggered by the control signal so that the sub-quality sheet is diverted to the auxiliary conveyor for depositing on the auxiliary pile. The mechanism not only accomplishes sorting but the fact of diversion and the observed rate of diversion provides constant instruction to the pressman as to the necessity for, and the degree of, a corrective change in ink feed rate.

  • Patent number: 4092022
Abstract: A device for the lateral and longitudinal positioning of sheets on the feed table of a printing press, with the leading edge of the sheet engaging a set of front stops and the lateral edge of the sheet in contact with a side guide, enabling accurate registered pick up by a transfer cylinder or the like. Cooperating laterally swingable wiper members are provided both above and below the sheet having friction shoes for wiping the sheet in the direction of the side guide. The friction shoes are connected to the respective wiper members in such a way as to provide freedom of relative movement at right angles to the direction of wipe so that the sheet may move against the front stops at the same time that is being wiped toward the side guide.

  • Patent number: 4061086
Abstract: The invention relates to an auxiliary pile board assembly for use in the temporary support of sheets at the delivery end of a sheet fed printing press and on which sheets are deposited during replacement of the main pile board. The assembly includes a pair of longitudinal rails of equal length spaced parallel to one another with first and second cross rails spanning the space between them. The first cross rail extends perpendicularly between corresponding ends of the longitudinal rails while the second cross rail extends between the longitudinal rails and is adjustably slidable with respect thereto. An auxiliary pile board of limited dimension is interposed between, and supported upon, the cross rails.

  • Patent number: 4015522
Abstract: A sheet-fed printing press installation comprised of a first press unit for printing on one side of a sheet and which is coupled by a chain type conveyor to a second press unit in which there is a transfer drum having a normal set of grippers and an auxiliary set of grippers for (a) additional printing on the same side of the sheet or (b) printing on the opposite side of the sheet. The conveyor has an inlet sprocket for taking of the sheet from the impression cylinder in the first press unit and an outlet sprocket for delivering the sheet to the impression cylinder in the second press unit. First and second transfer drums are interposed in series between the outlet sprocket and the impression cylinder of the second press unit, the first transfer drum having the normal and auxiliary set of grippers. When the auxiliary set of grippers is activated, the sheet is gripped at the trailing edge thereby to reverse the sheet for printing on the second side of the sheet in the second press unit.

  • Patent number: 3931791
Abstract: Sheet coating means for a printing press including a back-up cylinder and form cylinder having an associated fountain, the fountain having a fountain roller rotating adjacent the form cylinder. Also rotating adjacent the form cylinder is a first form roller which is coupled to the fountain roller via a dosing roller. The fountain and its associated rollers are mounted upon a subframe having provision for (a) shifting the fountain roller into liquid transmitting contact with the form cylinder and (b) shifting the first form roller into liquid transmitting contact with the form cylinder thereby, selectively, to change the length of the liquid transference path from the fountain to a sheet carried by the back-up cylinder in accordance with the drying speed of the coating material.
