    Abstract: A dummy plate is provided for offset printing which essentially consists of a plate-, sheet- or band-form, mechanically and/or electro-chemically roughened, anodically oxidized and optionally hydrophilized aluminium support and a non-photosensitive, water-soluble protective layer applied thereto, characterized in that the layer contains a water-soluble organic compound which contains at least one OH- or NH-acidic group having a pKa value of ≦8 as acid or salt, and has a layer thickness which is smaller than the average roughness ra of the support material, determined by optical means. Even after extended storage at elevated temperature, the dummy plate can easily be used without an additional development step and exhibits no tendency to stick.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a recording material having a substrate and a radiation-sensitive, water-insoluble layer which contains a component absorbing IR radiation and which, after the action of infrared radiation, becomes soluble or at least swellable in an aqueous alkaline developer. A top layer which is opaque to white light but transparent to radiation in the IR range and can be removed with water or an aqueous solution is present on the radiation-sensitive layer. The recording material is substantially insensitive to daylight. By imagewise exposure to IR radiation and subsequent development with an aqueous alkaline developer, it is possible to produce a printing plate for offset printing from the recording material. If the top layer is washed off beforehand, the recording can also be carried out using conventional UV radiation.

    Abstract: A positive-working or negative-working radiation-sensitive mixture includes as an IR absorbing component a carbon black pigment having a primary particle size smaller than 80 nm. The carbon black pigment is predispersed in a polymer containing acidic units having a pK.sub.a of less than 13. The radiation-sensitive component may include an ester of (i) a 1,2-naphthoquinone-2-diazide-4-sulfonic acid or a 1,2-naphthoquinone-2-diazide-5-sulfonic acid and (ii) a compound having at least one phenolic hydroxyl group, such as 3 to 6 phenolic hydroxyl groups. After imagewise radiation exposure, the recording material including the radiation-sensitive mixture can be developed without difficulties in an aqueous alkaline solution without leaving residual coating on the areas that became soluble or that remained soluble upon exposure.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a recording material having a plate- or sheet-like substrate, at least one IR-absorbing layer, which comprises at least one IR-absorbing component and at least one polymeric, organic binder and decomposes under the action of IR laser radiation or changes so that its adhesion to the silicone top layer decreases, and a top layer comprising a cured silicone rubber. The substrate comprises an oxidizable metal or one of its alloys and, at least on the side facing the IR-absorbing layer, is roughened and is covered with a layer of an oxide of the metal. The invention also relates to a process for the production of a waterless offset printing plate and to the printing plate itself which is produced from the recording material according to the invention and in which the hydrophilic surface of the oxide layer is ink-carrying and the oleophobic top layer is ink-repellent.

    Abstract: The process for the preparation of acyloxybenzenesulfonic acids of the general formula ##STR1## in which R denotes a (C.sub.1 -C.sub.17)-alkyl or (C.sub.2 -C.sub.17)-alkenyl radical, or alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salts thereof, is carried out in the following stages: (a) sulfonation of phenol, (b) heat treatment of the phenolsulfonic acid formed as the intermediate product, (c) esterification of the phenolsulfonic acid and, if appropriate, (d) neutralization of the resulting (C.sub.2 -C.sub.18)-acyloxybenzenesulfonic acid. As a result of the incorporation of stage (b), the process affords products in which the proportion of the 1,4-isomer compared with the 1,2-isomer is markedly increased, as a result of which these products can be used, in particular, as perborate activators in detergents.
