Patent number: 10683704Abstract: The present invention relates to a drilling system with a multi-function drill head used in, among other applications, oil and gas drilling. The system is used to enhance the effective permeability of an oil and/or gas reservoir by drilling or cutting new structures into the reservoir. The system is capable of cutting straight bores, radius bores, or side panels, by water jets alone or in combination with lasers. In various embodiments, a device for remotely controlling the mode of the system by variations in the pressure of a drilling fluid is also provided, allowing an operator to switch between various modes (straight drilling, radius bore drilling, panel cutting, etc.) without withdrawing the drill string from the well bore.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2018Date of Patent: June 16, 2020Assignee: Ramax, LLCInventors: Fun-Den Wang, Horace M. Patent number: 4878712Abstract: Coal is mined using water jets to a remove a layer of thin horizontal slices of coal. The thickness of the layer is sufficiently small that elastic deformation of the roof of the layer due to settling will cause the roof to rest against the floor of the layer. A number of additional layers of slices are then extracted in the same manner, each immediately below the floor of the preceding layer. The thickness and location of these layers wiht respect to previous layers is such that elastic deformation of the roof of the first layer due to settling will cause the roof to rest against the floor of the last layer of slices. Through the sequential mining of layers in this manner from top to bottom, the entire seam of coal is extracted and the mine roof rests upon the mine floor without the need for artificial roof support.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1988Date of Patent: November 7, 1989Inventor: Fun-Den Wang

Patent number: 4534427Abstract: An abrasive-fluid jet apparatus and process for drilling holes in rock having a rotary drill bit with multiple abrasive-fluid jet nozzles in the face of the bit and a stationary drill head housing torque generation apparatus and a rotary mounting holding the rotary drill bit beneath and in rotatable relation to the drill head. Abrasive supply facilities and fluid supply facilities are located at ground level for separate supply of the abrasive and the fluid to the abrasive-fluid jet nozzles. It is preferred that the abrasive be supplied to the nozzles in the form of slurry or foam. The apparatus and process of this invention permits deep hole drilling at lower fluid pressures than and without surface structures required by current deep drilling apparatus and techniques.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1983Date of Patent: August 13, 1985Inventors: Fun-Den Wang, Gene G. Patent number: 4479541Abstract: A method for oil, gas and mineral recovery by panel opening drilling including providing spaced injection and recovery drill holes (10, 12) which respectively straddle a deposit bearing underground region (20), each drill hole including a panel shaped opening (18, 19) substantially facing the deposit bearing region (20) and injecting the injection hole (10) with a fluid under sufficient pressure to uniformly sweep the deposits in the underground region to the recovery hole (12) for recovery of the deposits therefrom. An apparatus (50) for creating such panel shaped is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1982Date of Patent: October 30, 1984Inventor: Fun-Den Wang

Patent number: 4402552Abstract: A method for the separation of extracted viscous crude oil placed in a reservoir of a opened cell. Materials such as oil shale, oil sand, or tar sand may be involved. Hot water is introduced to the top surface of the reservoir material in the cell while steam is injected into a steam gallery running through the cell. The hot water and steam may contain a surfactant. The bouyancy of the crude oil creates an artificial water drive which causes the water and oil to "flip-flop" so that the oil rises to the top of the reservoir and separates from the remainder of the reservoir material. This separated oil may be removed from the cell and the remaining material disposed of.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1981Date of Patent: September 6, 1983Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the InteriorInventors: Dan M. Bass, Fun-Den Wang

Patent number: 4302051Abstract: A method for the in situ separation of viscous crude oil from a reservoir such as, oil sand, or tar sand is disclosed. Hot water is introduced to the top surface of the reservoir while steam is injected into the reservoir through drill holes. The hot water and steam may contain a surfactant. The bouyancy of the crude oil creates an artificial water drive which causes the water and oil to "flip-flop" so that the oil rises to the top of the reservoir and separates from the remainder of the reservoir material. If the overburden is deep, underground mining techniques may be used to reach the reservoir prior to applying the present method.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1979Date of Patent: November 24, 1981Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the InteriorInventors: Dan M. Bass, Fun-Den Wang
