Abstract: Chip-impalement spears for rotary cutters are provided in a rectangular shape with a single sharp bevelled edge along the top of the spears and adapted to be placed parallel to a roller of the rotary cutter. The spears are embedded in one roller and arranged so that their sharp edges will come into slight contact with an opposing roller. Properties of the spears, in particular, hardness, are selected to enable the spears to be rapidly bent over in use, forming a chip-retaining barb. Spears having this capability may be obtained by making transverse cuts across a cutting rule.

Abstract: Apparatus for removing and disposing of scrap paper chips impaled on a roller rotating away from the cutting region of a rotary cutter has a pneumatic baffle plate located a distance of 3/8 to 11/2 inches away from the roller, defining a narrow flow channel through which an air stream is sucked by a centrifugal fan. The baffle is spaced apart from the roller a distance such as to impart a high velocity to the air stream due to aerodynamic effects, causing chips to be forcibly removed from the roller when the chips reach an area above the flow channel. The baffle along with a chute that supports it and duct leading to the fan provide an enclosed channel for movement of the chips. The baffle edge adjacent the roller is provided with a curved surface to provide smooth flow of the air stream. The output of the fan has an air duct connected for conveying the chips to disposal.

Abstract: A sheeter for a web fed printing press having:an infeed section;a first cutting head into which the infeed section feeds the web, the first cutting head for cutting the web transversely comprising a circular knife cylinder and corresponding anvil cylinder having circumferences larger than the repeat length of the press;a sheet transfer section having rollers, which moves the cut web from the first cutting head to a second cutting head;the second cutting head comprising a circular knife cylinder and corresponding anvil cylinder to cut a chip from the cut web, a motor to rotate the first and second cutting heads and sheet transfer section rollers at the same surface speed; andnip rollers to deliver the finished product from the second cutting head to a delivery system.The second cutting head can be rotated with respect to the first cutting head so that the length of the chip can be increased or decreased.

Abstract: A cosmetic sampler comprising, a folded flexible sheet wherein disposed on the inner faces of the folds are opposing strips of oleaginous barriers and disposed on one of the barriers is a cosmetic. The outer top portion of the folded product has means for exposing the cosmetic layer. The cosmetic can then be applied directly to skin, or removed from the sampler with a applicator and applied to skin.
