Patent number: 8432411Abstract: A method, computer-usable medium, and system for processing graphical data for display on a multi-component display is disclosed. Embodiments improve the display quality of multi-component displays by modifying graphical data to preemptively compensate for distortion caused by interstitial layers and/or display screens of the multi-component display, thereby enabling display of graphical objects from multi-component displays with improved optical characteristics. For example, where components of a multi-component display blur displayed images, graphical data used to display graphical objects may be modified to sharpen the graphical objects before display. The pre-sharpening amplifies the high frequency components of the displayed graphical objects to compensate for the dampening caused by passing the graphical objects through the components of the multi-component display.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2007Date of Patent: April 30, 2013Assignee: Pure Depth LimitedInventors: Gareth Paul Bell, Daniel E. Evanicky, Edward Maurice Granger

Publication number: 20110188134Abstract: A method of controlling a point spread of an object is disclosed. The method includes determining a first value of a characteristic of an optical component of a display, wherein the display includes a first display screen and a second display screen, and wherein the first and second display screens overlap. The method also includes determining a position for the optical component based upon the first value of the characteristic by determining a distance from an origin of the object to the position based upon the first value of the characteristic.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 22, 2010Publication date: August 4, 2011Applicant: PURE DEPTH LIMITEDInventors: Gareth Paul Bell, Gabriel Damon Engel, Mark John Searle, Daniel Evanicky

Publication number: 20100248577Abstract: An improved optical diffuser for use in a multi-component display (MCD), and also to a method of manufacturing the same, is disclosed. Embodiments provide an optical diffuser film which may be manufactured with fewer manual operations, at a lower cost, and in larger volume than conventional optical diffusers. The optical diffuser film may include a flexible polymer substrate coupled to an optical diffuser material with a plurality of features for diffusing light. The optical diffuser film may be stored, transported, or otherwise handled more easily and with less damage than conventional optical diffusers. Additionally, the optical diffuser film may be coupled to a rigid substrate to reduce distortion of the optical diffuser, thereby providing improved optical performance.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 4, 2010Publication date: September 30, 2010Applicant: PURE DEPTH LIMITEDInventors: Gareth Paul Bell, Robert Craig

Publication number: 20100201921Abstract: A display including a first-order optical retarder and a method for assembling the same is disclosed. A display includes a first display screen operable to display a first image using a first plurality of pixels. A second display screen is operable to display a second image using a second plurality of pixels, wherein the first and second display screens overlap. The display also includes a first-order optical retarder disposed between the first and second display screens.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 22, 2010Publication date: August 12, 2010Applicant: PURE DEPTH LIMITEDInventor: Gareth Paul Bell

Publication number: 20100156922Abstract: A method of rendering an image using a multi-component display includes displaying a first image on a first display screen of the multi-component display, wherein the displaying the first image further includes displaying the first image with a first luminance. A second image is displayed on a second display screen of the multi-component display, wherein the first display screen and the second display screen overlap, and wherein the displaying the second image further includes displaying the second image with a second luminance. The displaying of the first image and the displaying of the second image further include displaying the first and second images in an overlapping manner to render the image, and wherein a perceived depth of the image is related to the first luminance and the second luminance.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 3, 2009Publication date: June 24, 2010Applicant: PURE DEPTH LIMITEDInventors: Gareth Paul Bell, Gabriel Damon Engel, Mark John Searle

Patent number: 7742239Abstract: A method of controlling the point spread function of an image projected with said image being diffused by a filter; said point spread function is a result of the application of spatial filter(s) on said image; with said control of the point spread function effected by varying the distance between such image and said spatial filter(s) and varying the bidirectional scattering transmission function of the spatial filter(s). Said spatial filter may be a holographic diffuser, which by method of manufacture has a well defined bi-directional scattering transmission spread function. Control of said spread function is particularly useful to maintain image quality while abating moiré interference in situations where two periodic patterns are layered causing moiré interference.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 2003Date of Patent: June 22, 2010Assignee: PureDepth LimitedInventors: Gareth Paul Bell, Gabriel Daemon Engel, Mark John Searle, Daniel Evanicky
