Patent number: 6935086Abstract: A double-bag package, and method for manufacturing same, constructed by modification to existing vertical form and fill packaging machines and perforation knives. In a preferred embodiment, the invention involves producing a double-bag package from a single sheet of packaging film by feeding a roll of film having graphics printed sideways rather than vertically into a vertical form, fill and seal packaging machine and using a novel perforating/cutting knife to alternately cut and perforate transverse seals. The perforating/cutting knife has teeth in the shape of oblique triangular pyramids, with each tooth having three cutting edges. The perforating/cutting knife produces self-correcting T-shaped perforation patterns capable of capturing and redirecting errant tears for fail-safe directional separation.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 2003Date of Patent: August 30, 2005Assignee: Frito-Lay North America, Inc.Inventors: Frank Mathew Brenkus, Anthony Robert Knoerzer, Garrett William Kohl, Steven Kenneth Tucker

Patent number: 6886313Abstract: A flat bottom bag or flexible package, and method for manufacturing same, constructed by modification to existing vertical form and fill packaging machines. The invention involves producing a flat bottom bag from a single sheet of packaging film by creating two vertical creases along opposite sides of a packaging film tube prior to forming a transverse seal on the tube. These creases are formed using fixed or stationary modifications to prior art vertical form, fill, and seal machines.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2004Date of Patent: May 3, 2005Assignee: Frito-Lay North America, Inc.Inventors: Anthony Robert Knoerzer, Garrett William Kohl, Steven Kenneth Tucker

Patent number: 6877296Abstract: In order to reduce the percentage of leaks in sealed packages, the sealing jaws contain one or more raised regions that correspond to problem areas for leaks, i.e., adjacent to back seals and folds in the package design. The raised regions are raised approximately 4-20 mils above the regions that seal the normal two layers of material.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2002Date of Patent: April 12, 2005Assignee: Frito-Lay North America, Inc.Inventors: Garrett William Kohl, Steven Kenneth Tucker

Patent number: 6860084Abstract: A vertical stand-up pouch, or flexible package having a zipper seal mechanism incorporated therein, and method for manufacturing same, constructed with a quick change module modification to existing vertical form and fill packaging machines. The invention involves producing a vertical stand-up pouch from a single sheet of packaging film by inserting a zipper seal mechanism on a first side of the packaging film tube and creating a vertical crease along the tube prior to forming a transverse seal on the tube. The zipper seal mechanism is attached to the packaging film prior to sealing the sheet of the packaging film along its longitudinal seam forming a tube comprising, in part, a quick change module that easily installs on the base of a forming tube. Likewise, the crease is formed using fixed or stationary modifications to prior art vertical form, fill, and seal machines comprising, in part, a quick change module that easily installs on the base of a forming tube.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 2003Date of Patent: March 1, 2005Assignee: Frito-Lay North America, Inc.Inventors: Anthony Robert Knoerzer, Garrett William Kohl, Steven Kenneth Tucker

Patent number: 6833170Abstract: A flexible food package with a wall comprised of thin film layers, one of which has a reduced permeability characteristic that reduces absorption by the package wall of oils associated with the food product in the package. The reduced permeability characteristic is achieved by an enhanced orientation or enhanced crystallinity of the polymers forming the thin film layer. Reducing the amount of oil absorbed by the package wall reduces the amount of swelling, puckering, and disfigurement of the package.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2003Date of Patent: December 21, 2004Assignee: Frito-Lay North America, Inc.Inventors: Anthony Robert Knoerzer, Garrett William Kohl

Patent number: 6746743Abstract: A flexible container with a wall structure comprised of multi-layer, flexible thin films, including a first film layer that is affixed to the wall structure by a releasable adherence and that incorporates a removable promotional piece. The removable promotional piece is incorporated into the first film layer such that, other than a continuous cut facilitating removal and any conspicuous printing on the removable portion, it is indistinguishable from the rest of the exterior of the package. The continuous cut allows for full detachment of the removable portion from the first film layer so that only the releasable adherence prevents it from separating from the container. The promotional piece is removed by peeling it away from the container, where the peeling is facilitated by the action of the continuous cut and releasable adherence. The removable piece may function as a gaming piece or redeemable coupon, or may be designed to retain a tacky surface and function as a sticker.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2002Date of Patent: June 8, 2004Assignee: Frito-Lay North America, Inc.Inventors: Anthony Robert Knoerzer, Garrett William Kohl, Steven Kenneth Tucker

Publication number: 20040091183Abstract: A vertical stand-up pouch or flexible package having an integrated reclose strip, and method for manufacturing same, constructed by modification to existing vertical form and fill packaging machines. The modified machine includes a crease-forming mechanism and an apparatus for applying a reclose strip to the sheet of material. The apparatus for applying a reclose strip is incorporated into the mechanism which supplies the continuous sheet of packaging material to the vertical form, fill, and seal machine. The invention involves producing a vertical stand-up pouch having an integrated reclose strip from a single sheet of packaging film by creating a vertical crease along one edge of a packaging film tube prior to forming a transverse seal on the tube. Said vertical crease is formed using a stationary tucker bar positioned outside the packaging film tube and between two forming plates positioned inside the packaging film tube.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 30, 2003Publication date: May 13, 2004Inventors: Martin Bernhard Dierl, Jay Edward Gehring, Anthony Robert Knoerzer, Garrett William Kohl, Steven Kenneth Tucker

Patent number: 6718739Abstract: A method and device are disclosed for forming and filling tubes containing a product, with the filling process taking place from the longer side of the tube, rather than the shorter side. An elongated product delivery tube contains product diverters that evenly spread out the product, allowing a clean seal in less time. An optional vibrator helps the product to settle quickly. Throughput is increased over the prior art, as well as facilitating improvements in opening the tube and in marketing.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2002Date of Patent: April 13, 2004Assignee: Frito-Lay North America, Inc.Inventors: Garrett William Kohl, Steven Kenneth Tucker, Anthony Robert Knoerzer, Jay E. Publication number: 20040065402Abstract: An embossing step is incorporated into a laminating step as two layers of a packaging material are laminated together by a sheet of molten resin. The design is carried on either the nip roller or chill roller that presses and cools the material during and after the laminating process. Combining the processes gives the capability to emboss an image into the hot material with less pressure than previously necessary. The images can be more detailed while at the same time the barrier properties of the material are damaged less.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 7, 2002Publication date: April 8, 2004Inventors: Anthony Robert Knoerzer, Garrett William Kohl

Patent number: 6679630Abstract: A flexible self-standing package and method for making the same provides for a package that has its own support mechanism. Thereby, a package, such as a snack food package, can be displayed in an upright position without the need to be placed against another package or wall. To achieve this, the package is formed with a support flap formed extended away from the tube of the package. When the package is positioned to stand, a pocket forms between the support flap and tube of the package to provide support.Type: GrantFiled: April 1, 2002Date of Patent: January 20, 2004Assignee: Recot, Inc.Inventors: Anthony Robert Knoerzer, Garrett William Kohl, Steven Kenneth Tucker
