Abstract: A catheter has an external hydrophilic surface coat which includes an anthraquinone such as aloin and/or emodin, which reduces risk of urinary tract infection and damage to epithelial cell lining of the urethra. Other preferred constituents include saponins, an anti-inflammatory agent, e.g. fatty acids and an antioxidant to help prevent injury to epithelial tissues and promote healing. A mucopolysaccharide may be included to help form a barrier against microbial invasion of the epithelium, and lignins.
