Patent number: 8819810Abstract: A system and method for automatically selecting a procedure for resetting an authentication data, such as a password, a PIN, a secret key, or a private key, according to the value of the user data protected by the authentication data and/or the likelihood for the user to forget or otherwise lose the authentication data. The user's preference is also considered in selecting the procedure for resetting the authentication data.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 2011Date of Patent: August 26, 2014Inventor: Gary G. Liu
-
Patent number: 8726009Abstract: A system and method to send a secure message from a sender to a recipient using strong encryption protocols without the need for the recipient to create a public/private key pair and by using a third party to appropriately identify the recipient without revealing actual identification information to the third party. Upon successful identification, the third party is able to provide a recipient with information that enables recipient to create and use the actual decryption key without revealing the actual decryption key to the third party.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2011Date of Patent: May 13, 2014Inventors: David P. Cook, Gary G. Liu

Patent number: 8027923Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for transmitting a message from a sender to an intended recipient. The method includes encrypting a message using a symmetric key, sending the encrypted message to an intended recipient without the symmetric key and providing the symmetric key to a third party. If the intended recipient signs and returns to the third party a receipt for the message, the method includes transferring, by the third party, the receipt to the sender and providing the symmetric key to the intended recipient.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 2007Date of Patent: September 27, 2011Assignee: Zix CorporationInventor: Gary G. Liu

Patent number: 7096493Abstract: Systems and methods to enhance safety of computer file distribution. The system includes a computer network, a server computer connected to said computer network one or more electronic records stored in the server computer wherein each record includes information about a particular file and is indexed by a hash value computed from the particular file and at least one user terminal connected to the computer network. The user terminal is operable to verify the authenticity of a particular file including computing the hash value of the particular file and retrieving from the server computer the electronic record that contains information about the particular file including submitting the computed hash to the server computer.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2000Date of Patent: August 22, 2006Inventor: Gary G. Patent number: 6675153Abstract: A method and apparatus for authorizing a transaction between a consumer and a merchant over a network where the anonymity of the consumer with respect to the merchant is maintained while still validating the authenticity of the consumer prior to completing the transaction. The method includes registering consumer payment information at a payment server and launching a charge slip application including securely transferring unique transaction information for display to the consumer. The consumer digitally signs the charge slip and encrypts the charge slip and consumer digital signature with a payment server key. The merchant digitally signs the encrypted charge slip data. The payment server authenticates the consumer, the merchant and the transaction details at the payment server and requests authorization of the transaction from a card processor. Upon approval, the payment server returns an approval and shipping information for the consumer to the merchant so that the transaction can be completed.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1999Date of Patent: January 6, 2004Assignee: Zix CorporationInventors: David P.
