    Abstract: A cardiovascular exercise machine used for simulating the motions of cross-country skiing including a means for providing arm and leg resistance in the forward as well as the backward direction, thereby allowing the user of the exercise machine to achieve a higher heart rate more easily than is achievable with cross-country skiing or other exercise machines. The apparatus includes a frame; two skates cabled together for rolling movement on separate tracks with a means for providing drag on the cable, the skates, tracks and drag means being mounted on the frame; and two pole carriage assemblies having floating brakes which provide frictional engagement during travel along opposed side rails.
