Patent number: 9739019Abstract: A bridge paving device includes one or more reference receivers to locate the bridge paving device in three-dimensional space. A computer apparatus receives the location of the bridge paving device and associates the location with a bridge paving design profile. The computer apparatus independently actuates a system of hydraulic actuators of the bridge paving device to level and orient the bridge paving device regardless of the travel surface the linear movement elements are running on. Additional hydraulic actuators may adjust the shape of the bridge paving device over time as the bridge paving device travels a linear distance of the bridge to be paved. The shape adjustment alters a crown or inversion applied to the bridge such that run-off characteristics are more variable and controllable along the entire span of the bridge.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2015Date of Patent: August 22, 2017Assignee: GOMACO CorporationInventor: Gary L. Patent number: 8682622Abstract: A method for analyzing roadway information includes receiving a first set of elevation data points defining at least a portion of an existing surface, receiving a second set of elevation data points defining at least a portion of an intended surface, comparing the first set of elevation data points to the second set of elevation data points to determine whether a relative elevation difference exists between corresponding data points of the first set of elevation data points and the second set of elevation data points, and generating an automated report displaying a comparison of the first set of elevation data points to the second set of elevation data points. The report provides information useful for planning pavement projects and/or maintaining the paved road surface.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 2010Date of Patent: March 25, 2014Assignee: GOMACO CorporationInventors: Mark W. Patent number: 7850395Abstract: A smoothness indicator analysis system generates a comprehensive report and a graphic user interface display useful for planning pavement projects and future maintenance of a paved road. The smoothness indicator analysis system includes an information handling system for analyzing elevation information collected and measured by a smoothness indicator. The information handling system may be configured to receive user selections and input parameters through a graphic user interface. Based on the user selections and the input parameters, the elevation information is analyzed and various reports are generated. An amount of paving material required for a given portion of the road surface and the pavement thickness of a given portion of the road surface may be estimated.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2006Date of Patent: December 14, 2010Assignee: GOMACO Corporation a division of Godbersen Smith Construction Co.Inventors: Mark W. Patent number: 7845878Abstract: A smoothness indicator for measuring a profile of a road surface includes two or more non-contact elevation distance sensors, such as ultrasonic sensors, laser sensors, or the like. The non-contact elevation distance sensors are arranged in pairs including a trailing non-contact elevation distance sensor and a leading non-contact elevation distance sensor disposed at a known distance from the trailing non-contact elevation distance sensor along the profile. A slope sensor for measuring an angle of incidence of the leading and trailing non-contact elevation distance sensors relative to a horizontal plane is also included. The smoothness indicator generates an elevation profile of the road surface by calculating an elevation for the second location using an elevation assigned to the first location and an elevation difference between the first location and the second location.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2007Date of Patent: December 7, 2010Assignee: GOMACO CorporationInventors: Gary L. Patent number: 7044680Abstract: Knowledge of the profile of a road surface—most importantly its defects—is a must to construct an acceptable road surface in this day of high speed traffic. Measurement and calculation of the surface during the process of forming the road—when the road material is still plastic—provides the opportunity to repair unacceptable defects while the road surface material can still be worked. The benefits include a smoother, more durable surface at a lesser cost than methods used on hardened road surfaces. Shown herein is for a method and apparatus for calculating a surface's elevation profile using measurements taken by non-contact devices at a number of locations. Since non-contact sensors are used, elevation profiles of wet concrete can be measured and calculated. Such an apparatus can be mounted on a road paving machine to provide a real time feedback of the surface so corrections to the surface and to the paving machine's operation can be made as required.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2002Date of Patent: May 16, 2006Assignee: Gomaco CorporationInventors: Gary L. Patent number: 6099204Abstract: An apparatus for inserting dowel bars into a concrete slab in association with a slip forming machine of a type having a frame with a pan attached thereto for shaping uncured concrete into a continuous concrete slab. The pan itself has a space therein completely across the pan and dowel bar retainers are disposed above this space in the pan for holding dowel bars in readiness to be inserted into the concrete slab. A dowel bar inserter is disposed above each of the dowel bar retainers for pushing the dowel bars down, preferably all at one time. The dowel bar inserter is adjustable and removable. If removed, the forward and rear portions of the pan can be bolted together instead of being spaced apart.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1996Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Inventor: Gary L. Godbersen

Patent number: 5061115Abstract: An attachment for a slip forming paver for automatically finishing concrete surfaces which includes an elongated concrete smoothing trowel member. A mechanism is provided for oscillating the trowel member back and forth along its longitudinal axis and includes another mechanism for moving the oscillating mechanism and the trowel member itself transversely with respect to such longitudinal axis. The trowel member is pivotally mounted to the oscillating mechanism by a pair of levers and a winch and cable mechanism is provided for selectively adjusting the effective weight of the trowel member with respect to the concrete being smoothed by the trowel member. A turnbuckle arrangement is provided for adjustably maintaining the lower surface of the trowel member straight and smooth by applying tension forces thereon. To the extent that the weight adjusting mechanism and the turnbuckle arrangement move the trowel member out of balance, a single weight is provided, on the end opposite the winch.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 1990Date of Patent: October 29, 1991Assignee: Gomaco Corp.Inventors: Gary L. Patent number: 4343513Abstract: The method and power transmission system of this invention for driving a road planar machine has the cutter unit in a positive mechanical drive with the drive shaft of a machine power unit through a hydraulically actuated clutch mechanism. The wheel traction units for the machine are continuously driven from the power unit by hydraulic motors operated by variable volume displacement pumps. A control system for retaining the power unit at a set rotational speed required for a predetermined cutting or planing load is responsive to a drop in the set rotational speed, resulting from the cutting unit encountering an overload, to actuate the variable displacement pumps to decrease the forward speed of the machine without appreciably reducing the rotational inertia force of the cutting unit. If the cutting unit overload is of a short duration or momentary the set rotational speed of the power unit is resumed.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1980Date of Patent: August 10, 1982Assignee: Gomaco, Inc.Inventor: Gary L.
