Patent number: 6124376Abstract: Disclosed is a process which comprises incorporating into an ink jet printing apparatus an ink composition which comprises water, a colorant, and a polymer of the formula ##STR1## wherein m, n, x, and y are each integers representing the number of repeat monomer units, and wherein the ratio of x:y is from about 10:90 to about 90:10, and causing droplets of the ink to be ejected in an imagewise pattern onto a recording sheet.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1998Date of Patent: September 26, 2000Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Garland J. Nichols, Min-Hong Fu, Gary R. Fague, James P. Bareman, Francisco E. Torres

Patent number: 5814138Abstract: A microwave dryable thermal ink jet ink including an aqueous liquid vehicle, a co-solvent of formylethanolamine, acetylethanolamine, triethanolamine, trimethylolpropane, thiodiethanol, sulfolane and 1,3-dimethylimidazolidinone, a colorant, and ammonium bromide is described. Ammonium chloride may also be included in the microwave dryable ink so long as the ink also contains ethylene glycol as a second co-solvent. A method of forming an image on an image receiving substrate with a microwave dryable thermal ink jet ink of applying in imagewise fashion to the image receiving substrate by thermal ink jetting a microwave dryable thermal ink jet ink comprising formylethanolamine, acetylethanolamine, triethanolamine, trimethylolpropane, thiodiethanol and 1,3-dimethylimidazolidinone, a colorant, and ammonium bromide, and thereafter exposing the image receiving substrate to microwave radiation to dry the image on the substrate is also described.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1997Date of Patent: September 29, 1998Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Gary R. Fague

Patent number: 5683520Abstract: Several methods are provided for cleaning felt or foam materials that are used to store and deliver ink, particularly ink supplied to ink jet printheads in an ink jet printing system. The felt materials are contaminated during manufacture, by various antistats, primarily phosphates. These antistats later react with the ink to create kogation and nozzle blocking problems as well as reduction of surface tension of the ink. The methods of the invention are directed to reducing the antistats left in the storage material after manufacture. In one method, the material is washed in heated softened water. Prior to loading the material in the wash, IPA is added to the heated wash. The material is washed through two Wash/Rinse cycles and then dried. The removal of the calcium in the wash water via softening prevents the precipitation of calcium-phosphate salts, which, when the material later contacts the ink, reduces nozzle clogging caused by these precipitates.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1996Date of Patent: November 4, 1997Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Norman S. Edgett, Gary R. Fague, Louis V. Isganitis, Kurt B. Gundlach, Joseph R. Weber

Patent number: 5570118Abstract: An apparatus for printing a multicolor image on a sheet movable along a sheet path in a process direction. The apparatus includes a first printhead mounted at a first location along the sheet path and containing a first type ink for printing a first portion of the image on the sheet in which the first type ink has a surface tension greater than 40 dynes/cm at room temperature. The apparatus also includes a set of secondary printheads mounted along the sheet path and separated a small gap from the first printhead. The set of secondary printheads each contains a secondary type ink for printing a secondary portion of the multicolor image on the sheet, and each of the secondary type ink has a surface tension less than 40 dynes/cm at room temperature.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1994Date of Patent: October 29, 1996Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventors: Ivan Rezanka, John W.
