  • Patent number: 6877980
Abstract: A burner for use in furnaces such as in steam cracking. The burner includes a primary air chamber; a burner tube having an upstream end, a downstream end and a venturi intermediate said upstream and downstream ends, said venturi including a throat portion having substantially constant internal cross-sectional dimensions such that the ratio of the length to maximum internal cross-sectional dimension of said throat portion is at least 3; a burner tip mounted on the downstream end of said burner tube adjacent a first opening in the furnace, so that combustion of the fuel takes place downstream of said burner tip; and a fuel orifice located adjacent the upstream end of said burner tube, for introducing fuel into said burner tube.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 14, 2003
Date of Patent: April 12, 2005
    Assignee: ExxonMobil Chemical Patents Inc.

  • Publication number: 20030175634
Abstract: An improved burner and a method for combusting fuel in burners used in furnaces, such as those used in steam cracking, are disclosed. The burner includes a burner tube having an upstream end and a downstream end and means for drawing flue gas from the furnace or air from a source of air or mixtures thereof in response to an inspirating effect of uncombusted fuel flowing through the burner tube from its upstream end towards its downstream end. A burner tip is mounted on the downstream end of the burner tube adjacent a first opening in the furnace, the burner tip having a plurality of main ports in an external surface thereof so that combustion of the fuel takes place downstream of the burner tip, the number and dimensions of said main ports in said external surface being such that the ratio of the total area of the main ports in said external surface is at least 1 square inch per million (MM) Btu/hr burner capacity.

  • Patent number: 6129542
Abstract: A dual mode pilot burner having a control flame mode of operation and a pilot flame mode of operation, which dual mode pilot burner is suitable for controlling the fuel/air ratio of a main burner when operating in the control flame mode of operation. The dual mode pilot burner includes a burner body having a control flame holder and a pilot flame holder disposed downstream of the control flame holder, a mixing chamber having a fuel gas inlet, an oxidant inlet, and a mixed gas outlet, which mixed gas outlet is in fluid communication with the control flame holder and a fuel gas control valve for controlling a fuel gas flow rate through the fuel gas inlet into the mixing chamber.
