Patent number: 8836609Abstract: A stereoscopic display device includes a display panel, and a light modulator. The display panel provides a first display information and a second display information alternately by scanning. The light modulator is disposed on the side of a display surface of the display panel and receives the first display information and the second display information. The light modulator provides a first modulating mode and a second modulating mode alternately by scanning synchronously with the display panel. The first modulating mode corresponds to the first display information, and renders the first display information having a first polarization state; the second modulating mode corresponds to the second display information, and renders the second display information having a second polarization state.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 2009Date of Patent: September 16, 2014Assignee: AU Optronics Corp.Inventors: Chao-Yuan Chen, Geng-Yu Liu, Jenn-Jia Su, Ting-Jui Chang

Patent number: 8427529Abstract: A three-dimensional display for the viewer to watch through glasses is provided, wherein the glasses have two lenses and the polarized directions thereof are perpendicular to each other. The three-dimensional display includes a display panel and a liquid crystal phase modulator. The display panel, suitable for displaying an image, has a plurality of pixels arranged in array and a polarizer having a transmission axis, wherein the polarizer disposed between the pixels and the glasses. The liquid crystal phase modulator suitable for providing phase retardation includes a liquid crystal layer and an alignment layer adjacent to the display panel. An included angle between an alignment direction of the alignment layer and the transmission axis is substantially equal to n×45 degrees, wherein an absolute value of n is an integer. The liquid crystal phase modulator adjusts a phase of the image and then outputs an image with three-dimensional information.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 2008Date of Patent: April 23, 2013Assignee: Au Optronics CorporationInventors: Chao-Yuan Chen, Chih-Wen Chen, Geng-Yu Liu, Wan-Hua Lu, Ting-Jui Chang

Patent number: 8379158Abstract: A three-dimensional (3D) display including a display panel and a phase retardation film is provided. The display panel has a plurality of first pixel regions and a plurality of second pixel regions that are arranged as an array. The phase retardation film is disposed on the surface of the display panel. The phase retardation film has a plurality of first retardation regions and a plurality of second retardation regions that are alternately arranged. The first retardation regions have the same phase retardation, the second retardation regions have the same phase retardation, and the phase retardation of the first retardation regions is different from that of the second retardation regions. All the regions of the phase retardation film have the same transmittance. A display method adaptable to the 3D display is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2010Date of Patent: February 19, 2013Assignee: Au Optronics CorporationInventors: Li Chen, Chia-Chih Kao, Chao-Yuan Chen, Geng-Yu Liu, Wen-Hao Hsu, Jenn-Jia Su
